Camera Film Photo in Hong Kong

28 43

Meet Vishal from Camera Film Photo. He’s a Hong Kong native, but was a late bloomer when it came to discovering the beauty and charm of analogue photography. He’s played catch-up real fast though. In fact, him and his wife decided to open up their wholesale-online shop just a few years ago, and now their brand is a major player in the film photography world in Hong Kong and Asia. What I really liked about Vishal’s story was that he started his business after he discovered the love of film photography. It’s more than a business, it’s his passion. After being encouraged by friends and backed up by his wife, there was no looking back for Camera Film Photo. Enjoy my conversation with Vish, as well as his fantastic pictures. He says he’s not a real photographer, but I beg to differ. Check out his website, as well as his business and personal Instagram account:

Thanks to Victor of Barton 1972 for being my cameraman for this video. It was shot with the Fujifilm X-T2 and XF10-24mm lens in AF continuous mode. Check out Barton 1972’s awesome YouTube channel, website and IG account:

*Thank-you Helen and Florence of Fujifilm Canada for the loaner camera and lens for this project. Video edited using iMovie on a MBP13 2015. Intro and Outro music ‘Park Bench’ and ‘Piano Ballad’ license and royalty free music from iMovie library

35mm film is expensive to buy, and even more expensive to process – at least in North America.
What are prices like in Asia (e.g. Hong Kong), for film processing (mounted slides and copied to CD ROM).
Are there many photo labs still in operation there?

I am asking because on my next trip to Asia, I would consider buying the film upon arrival (saves the hassles of going through security and having the film hand inspected on the side), and then getting the film developed in Asia before heading home.

When Vishal said he's not a street photographer, just someone who likes to shoot photos, I definitely didn't expect such great work, way better than that of many who are too eager to call themselves photographers just because they own a camera (this coming from someone who doesn't call himself a photographer yet either!)

Love it. Is Vish printing his black and white work in the darkroom or digitally?

That was a wonderful conversation yet again. Well done, Take! You know, almost nobody does this anymore, this actual sitting down with photographers of many walks of life, and just talk about passion for photography, whatever gear or media they use. You help fill a huge gap that really warms up our hearts here, man. You know I support you in whatever direction you decide to take, but this had to be said. Good job! Keep it up!

Great interview and great photography! Thanks Take. I'm wondering if there is any way to reach out to Vishal to see if he would consider selling a print of the photograph you are both sitting in front of, of the Goodwood revival. Vishal, if you are reading this would absolutely love to buy a print.

I wonder how old he is? Because I grew up with analog photography and was born in 1992. I got a Nikon Coolpix which had 4mp when I was maybe 12… but before that myself and my family were all film
