WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY can be frustrating – but also rewarding

Wildlife photography can be sometimes be really frustrating. But also extremely rewarding. I was going to photograph the dipper, but startet to rain a lot. Making me soaking wet. So I needed to give up. But the day after I was out to photograph the red squirrels again. But nature gave me a great surprise. The grey heron gave me a lot of great experience and great images. Hope you enjoy this video.

Here in the North West of England little egrets are now a common bird, it’s not usual to see 20 or so from the Eric Morecambe hide at Leighton Moss. It’s amazing how many variations there are of red squirrels, in Scotland, especially the north they are much redder with paler tails and in the Lake District their tails are darker. The one you were shooting had quite a grey body with very dark tails. I think grey herons are beautiful birds and incredibly effective predators. My wife cannot not watch any animal being hunted on TV, but she was totally enthralled when we once saw a heron catch and eat a rat.

You got some gorgeous images as always, and of course it was another brilliant video.

When you're filming wildlife with a long lens do use a magnifying viewfinder to help focus?

Your patience got rewarded Trond. The images were just beautiful. We have lots of blue herons overhere, but I never saw one catch a frog. Great you got that on camera. The images you shot are (as always) very beautiful.

Love it! As I think I noticed others have mentioned, I would have called that a great blue heron. But, I am not a bird expert. Also, I'm in the USA. Some critters have slightly different names in different parts of the world. Speaking of which, I think I should follow some of you footsteps to spot those squirrels and birds! That is, in fact, my favorite bird but I can almost never get good photos of them because I have a hard time finding and getting close to them.

Funny how you can become attracted to a special bird. When I was young and foolish I shot a beautiful bird. The Phainopepla is a proud bird that is kind of special. It's diet is special. I always look for them.
