I remember being told to never do back lighting because the subject will be really dark when I was still a kid and playing around with a camera

Now I know it’s either the camera has bad dynamic range or it’s not exposed properly 🤣

  16. Comrade Stalin says

If you’re shooting back lighting, wear black to not affect your subject’s colour and reflection in their eyes. If you wear a bright colour it can make your subject have a slight bit of your clothes’ colour. Only applies to shooting closer up with a wide lens

I don't quite understand though, won't back lighting be like high contrast in terms of back light is white and face is super dark?

When you say you get your models face perfectly exposed and then you underexpose by dropping "a stop or two," what exactly does that mean? Do you actually change the aperture or do you use spot metering and dial down your shutter speed?
