Photography Lighting Lesson – Remember the EGG
Before you can learn ‘how” to light, you must learn how to ‘SEE” light. I will walk you through a defining moment in my career and how a simple egg, changed the way I approach lighting and photography forever.
Watch closely as the light travels slowly around the egg. You may want to replay this part a few times to watch how the shape of the egg changes, the shadow shape and depth changes and the shade and tone of the background changes.
In the second example the light simply moves from front to back beginning at the camera like an on camera flash and traveling over the top of the egg towards the background.
Now do you understand the importance of the egg?
If you are going to photograph the human face and form, the lessons the egg teaches us are invaluable.

Hey Joe Great Video !! , btw can you tell us the name of your Brother, he deserves some credits for being in front of the camera 😉
Eggcellent tutorial!
This is great, thank you! I showed your video to my photography class today and had them take photos of an egg. I wasn't sure what they would think and was so happy when I heard, "This is so cool!" Great lesson, thank you!
Informative video…but Wow! Had to check again if it was really you! You are now so trim and full of energy vs the you of 2010! I'm inspired! Great job 👍
Can I give more than one thump up?
Damn, I don't have a white egg🤣
That´s the most simple and also most perfect explanation for using light I´ve EVER learned. Really!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge… Best regards from Germany – FJ
Yes, do it yourself
Thank You Joe !! Priceless information! This is the best lesson i have learnt in my last ten years of photography!!! NOBODY has ever put in this form to make it so easy to comprehend! and of course, the only way to get a real life feeling is to go and do it! I'm going to do it with both a brown egg and white egg, would there be any difference due to colour?
Thank you for making the lighting simple to understand. Keep up the good work!
Wow this was a different you back in 2010
That's a cute looking egg! 🙂
You were a bit chubby back then, you look a lot healthier now
Oh my gosh the egg. Somewhere in a box somewhere I have drawings of six eggs. An assignment at art school. I had to draw the shadows. Never occurred to me to do this with photography. Will be doing my eggs very soon. 🙂
nice information sir
Love this video. Joe is right, do it yourself.
Those friends of ours who send us pictures standing in front of a light! @2:21

Thank You, sir… I like mi ne scrambled too… 🙂
Finally!!! Someone explained to me how to find light in a clear concise way. Thanks Joe! Breakfast on me! LOL
You lost a lot of weight huh?
this good..thank you!
厉害了
Man, jokes aside, you are full of good knowledge! I will do this!
Information every photography should have but few actually learn. Great video!
Joe! Wow! What a transformation. A great reinvention of yourself. You should redo this video, it still works, but your new, more dynamic self would get this subject across much better. Just my two bits! Thanks
Wow! This is a really great video even in 2017. Gives great perspective on lighting.
After listing to your honest response to a new Facebook members post last night, I knew I had to practice with the egg. After a two hour investment, I now realize the genius in the simplicity of this exercise. For the first time, I was painting with light. I used a piece of paper as a reflector and now I’m practicing Rembrandt lighting and Clam Shell lighting. I’m seeing the angles of reflection between the light, reflector and egg. Thank you Joe for relentlessly exhorting us to practice this exercise.
i watched this video back in spring 2011 and i learned so much from it and since then ive bin following you Joe , but now today in 2017 my daighter has for the last 6 months bin really interested in photography so here i am back with my princess watching your video again and again and again to let you teach her the same u did for me back in 2011.. thx for everything Joe
