Photography in Scotland… With an American

31 19

I am now on the Isle of Mull in Scotland and I will be spending the next 2 days enjoying some landscape photography with Nick Page, Adam Gibbs and Gavin Hardcastle. Nick Page is an American and he is not too impressed with the ways of the Scottish landscape. Of course I do my fair share of complaining too and all in all I think it is quite hilarious. Enjoy.

I've been through the Palouse before and it is beautiful. I've even thought of taking Nick Pages guides there because I was never sure of where to go and if it was ok to be on certain properties.

We have swamps as we call them and they have huge Alligators and Pythons. In the Pacific Northwest where I call home we have Bigfoot and six feet + of rain every year.

Saw the videos from Nick's perspective as well 🙂

great video. I lacked inspriration the last few weeks and your videos always give it a boost. Thank you!

  5. Rob Woolf says

Did you have a dump at 5.57?

For Peat's sake, you went to the wrong island, Gavin would have been more at home at Islay, you arrive Port Ellen and you are a hop, skip and a jump away from Laphroaig, then Lagavulin and Ardbeg, then head west to hit the other distilleries.

Boats look fantastic. Reverse Grad must make that so much easier. Tree shot is great, the grad works perfectly. I am never normally that inclined to grad across a sky. Good to see grads are alive and kicking still. 😁

Looking behind you to the left (over your right shoulder) at the end of the video with the back light reflecting off the beach and the edge of the boat from a low angle I see a nice abstract silhouette shot…

Hey THOMAS! Just started to get into this video after getting back from a 4 day Harley tour through Colorado with GORGEOUS scenery and thought of you. Man, the mountains just out of Breckenridge (possibly the Rockies) were phenominally mind blowing. You may have already shot them but if not definitely a must go to for you. _Scott

Loved Mull. As a n American I thought driving the single track across the Island to the Iona ferry was loads of fun. Kept up with the buses and truck at least…. hope you stopped for a wee bit of whisky… I stopped to photograph those twin lakes. What a “loovely” place.

Fun video and great to see you two together again. At one point you said you couldn’t find any good compositions despite good light. I’ll accept your judgement. However, at 8:40 there was a harbor and boat on the far shore that was lit up by the setting sun. I know that you usually carry a long lens. Given one such lit area, I’d have scanned for more.

American has swamps, big snakes AND I can take you to some places that will swallow you, just like that bog. Great video, and much enjoyed it. Thanks.

I loved the detail of the close up shots at 14.15.

  16. Yeah it was raining non stop for the past week. Did the NC500 and it rained 3 of 4 days we spent on the road. At least you got the one day it didn't rain the past week.

  17. Daniel Angelov says

I think that snake was "Vipera berus" which is poisonous :

i've been to the pallouse. ya there's nothing there

  19. Frank Otto Pedersen says

Thats the luxury of being a full time landscape photographer, just sitting out a sunset. Happy for you, man! 🙂

What a beautiful beast that adder. I’ve met a few back here in Norway. They’re quite common where I live. They usually wont nothing to do with you but they do give a bit of a fright when they flee over your foot, while you’re busy setting up! Excellent and honest video today! I liked it and I did like the first image of the tree! Looking forward to more 😀🦊

  21. Des Gardner says

The pleasure I got from this video was just being there. Yes I enjoyed the video and how you explained the problems you had with your compositions….thank you…

  22. Michael Hill says

Love the image of the boats!

  23. Mitchell Coyle says

I got to say Tom, I’m really enjoying the funny side of your videos recently, it’s the perfect mix of relaxing photography and surprisingly funny jokes 😉 keep this trend going!!!

  24. Kathleen Hart says

My hard drives are full of photos taken out of obligation to the effort in getting there, but remain meaningless. It is true that sometimes your eyes capture the best photos and memories.❤

  25. TrueDamascus says

    Really like the boat picture!

  26. Mick Warwick says

Had a giggle to myself about the song playing in the van! 😂👍

  27. PowerMisting says

The tree image is beautiful…please go back and get a winter shot:)

  28. Angky Doodle says

Well, I can tell you with emphasis, that I surely did appreciate your "rationalization of frustration", if I may turn that phrase! 🙂
How to say it… Seeing a beautiful scene, at just the right time of light, carrying the right camera(s) and equipment, but the composition just does not come on. Grab a few images just to justify the effort of getting there. And then, you know what? After the fact, both images turn out to be beautiful images made! Your philosophizing to reconcile the disappointment of "less than grand" sure tickled me; how many times that has proven to be true of the life of a guy committed to snatching images from God's beauty. My nearly 60 years' files of chromes on frustrating days say that you are doing photography just like it really is! Carry on! And remember that the cup-a-coffee may be just as important as the texture of rotting wood on an old boat, some days.

Loved the tree photo so much detail in the moss but stay simple
