How To Transfer Images onto Canvas Arts & Crafts Tutorial

31 29

See written instructions below. For this project, you will need:
Mod Podge Matte Finish: or Gloss Finish:
Canvas: | Sponge Paint Brush:
Sponge Roller: | Craft Scissors:

You can use any image you like. For this demonstration I used ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’ by Chris Price, taken from Harper’s Bazaar ‘The Big Red Book’.

Directions
1. Take the image to the photocopier and scan it. If it has writings, flip it over.
2. Take the Modge Podge and pour it onto the canvas by covering all of it. Use a brush to make it even.
3. Take the image and place it on to the canvas, make sure to even up the sides and leave no wrinkles.
4. Take the roller and roll the image so that it fits perfectly on to the canvas, make sure that there is no glue onto the paper top.
5. Get rid of any glue stains that have pushed out on the sides of canvas.
6. Leave the canvas with image to dry out for 24 hours.
7. After the 24 hours, get a sponge, soak it in water and make the top layer of paper wet. You will start to see the image below.
8. Turn the canvas vertically and rub the paper side of canvas gently with your fingers, so the paper comes off slowly.
9. Keep on rubbing down the paper. If needed, add more water so that it comes off easier.
10. When you have cleared the image, you are finished. Good job!

Love this! Can you do it with a full color printed image, such as an enlarged printed photo? Or does this only work in black and white?

  6. MM Wiley says

I love how she just rips off the seal on the mod podge. That was the hardest part for me!!! I ended up just stabbing it… solves most of my problems and that method didn't fail me this time. Awesome technique and awesome details too. Thanks!

I really want to try to do this with my drawings and then paint them….does anyone know if the image has to be from a magazine or if you can actually use just a drawing? I have been drawing for a long time, but painting is a whole new world for me so I want to use this to get original art until I can paint better free hand.

Laser printer only? Couldn't understand what you said about that.

  14. Norfolk250 says

    Careful
Things in magazines may well-be copyrighted, where copying can lead to trouble β€” ESPECIALLY if one intends to sell the copied stuff.
    Just sayin’.

    Kisses sweetie darling

nice job. but for those who want wrinkles vintage look wrinkle are ok some people use a thin layer of a printed paper napkin for say like a tea tray you separate the paper napkins and use mod podge in that case its ok to make it look oldish. but you did well for this.
