Hi, I’m Carl. My story involves my nan and her Instagram obsession. So, my nan has been on her own for a while now as grandad passed away several years ago. Nan has always had friends, but I know she gets lonely sometimes. So, me and my brother Eddy usually go to see nan a couple of times a week.
One day, nan was asking us about school. But Eddy was staring at his phone and not answering. Nan turned to me and asked:
“What’s Eddy doing?”
“Eddy’s just on Instagram. Everyone at school has it.”, I replied to nan.“What’s that?”, nan asked.“It’s an app where you put up photos and talk to people” I said.
As soon as we finished our dinner, nan asked us to set her up an Instagram account. So, we did! She looked so excited.
Her first act on her account was to follow me and Eddy. Of course, we followed her too. Surpeisingly, Nan was getting the hang of it fast, and I was glad that it was entertaining her, but few days later, I found myself regretting ever introducing her to Instagram! It turned into a disaster! As I was flicking through Instagram days later, I was shocked to see that the first photo she posted was my embarrassing baby picture, with the caption, “my sweet Carl”. I decided not to say anything to my her to avoid making her upset, I just hoped that no one would see it.
When I next saw nan, she was so proud to get many likes from people. So proud, that she followed that up with a photo of me and Eddy wearing a pink sweater she made for us.
And by the next day, most of our friends and family were following my grandma’s account. She was becoming popular! Apparently, people really enjoyed seeing embarrassing pictures! To make it all worse, Eddy told me that nan had been following all the people that me and him follow on our accounts, and of course, they followed her too.
When Nan was running out of old pictures, she started taking our pictures whenever we would visit, paying attention or not, she just did it and always had the weirdest captions to describe us. She called me her teddy bear, sweet pumpkin and stinky monkey in front of hundreds of followers!
I was really annoyed. My plan was to ask her to remove it and maybe not upload photos like that. However, nan was so delighted with the Instagram response. I chickened out and didn’t say anything about the embarrassment. She was having more fun now than she has in years.
Until one time, things really got out of hand! Nan took a video of me as I was asleep at her house the other night. I snored so loud in it! Honestly, it was horrible how loud it was. On top of that I was drooling all over the pillow.
She captioned it with, “My sweet sleeping angel”. Nan doesn’t do sarcasm, so she really meant that too!
Some people from school saw me and laughed. Some even made snoring noises when they saw me. I wandered if this was my life now. That nan would slowly embarrass me more and more. Eddy found the snoring and dribbling post funny. He even reposted the video on his account…thanks bro(!)
On Monday morning, I walked into school. I got a load of wolf-whistles this time. It was weird. Then I realised that nan had done something again. I quickly went to Instagram on my phone and looked at nan’s profile. She had found another embarrassing photo of me. Why is it always me?! It’s never Eddy! Nan had uploaded a photo of me from Christmas last year. In the photo, I‘d let my younger cousin put make-up all over my face. My face had it smeared all over. I was also wearing one of these cheesy, bright Christmas jumpers that nan had knitted for me. I looked really, really weird.
She captioned it: “My handsome grandson playing with my beautiful granddaughter!”.
And on top of all this, grandma was messaging and chatting with my friends all day, they would ask her to tell them more about us and she was happy to tell them all kind of embarrassing stories about us.
I couldn’t deal with this anymore. My friends took the mick all the time, they constantly teased me. They eagerly waited for nan’s next upload for more ammunition.
