killing a lie. the photo art of palestinian deception & propaganda

Ruben Salvadori was asked: One of your Artworks that represent you. Would you like to speak about it? Can you write a comment about it?

“I am in constant change and development for what concerns my identity as a photographer, and it is hard to say which of my works represents me in general. I think one work that maybe represents what I’m going through right now is a series of photos I called “Killing Drama” which is some sort of self criticism on photojournalism that helped me decide what I DO NOT want to be “when I grow up”.

The media industry strictly requires dramatic images, forcing photojournalists to look for drama in their subjects and sometimes to add dramatization to the image itself even when the situation lacks of it. Additionally the public is daily overwhelmed with photographs from conflict areas, but it misses to consider one factor that is there on the scene: the photographer.

In this series I tried to break the taboo of the “invisible photographer” in order to include all factors in the scenario. This causes an elimination of the drama, showing the “behind the scenes” of how the image is produced.

I don’t consider the quality of these specific photos to represent me, since the level is below my usual standards, but the content is a strong personal statement that made a lot of noise among the photojournalists in the area, raising many angry reactions. It is sad to see how the industry makes many colleagues opt for a publish-or-perish model that does not leave the time to think about how our own presence influences the events we witness and how our images are often over-dramatized in order to be considered by the media market.

We often deal with the world nastiest problems; we can’t afford not to think.”

So happy that the world has caught-on to their 'tricks'; even though it's ALL FAKE, I still wouldn't give these sewer-dwellers an Academy Award.

Good job, Reuben. I have some information for you to collect.
Yes, this set-up photography is done in other countries. It was in El Salvador in the late 70's/early 80's. Photographers from ABC, CBS and NBC were enjoying their lives there. They lived in the San Salvador Hilton, for years, all expenses paid. They were all also on salary. Each news company had a whole floor. Ex: NBC was on the 3rd floor. (I was there.) They smoked pot right in the hotel, even though it the nation is strict on drugs. They all had giant refrigerated coolers full of beer and cokes. The only work they had was to go find a few people that will allow them to set them up with a fake scene for a $5 or $10. They set up with fake guns, bandanas (like the Sandinistas), and took photos that did not match reality. In reality, it was very peaceful, in 1982. There were no more killings. The government's military had rounded up the Communists responsible for the earlier mayhem and killed or removed them from the country. To continue to be able to live for free, getting high, hanging out, etc. the photojournalists would pay locals to set off firecrackers in the city late at night, in one or two areas where the population is largest. That gave them some sufficient "evidence" that the Attempt at Communist takeover war was still going on. New York was content. The government knew but the Hilton didn't say no to the photojournalists that filled 3+ hotel floors and an open tab on each employee for the news agencies. I'd say there were at least 50 living in there. (A lot of them had adjoining rooms which they always kept open. So their hotel rooms were like big apartments, with every need provided.)
If ABC, NBC and CBS were okay with this in El Salvador in 1982, where else have they done this? Probably, everywhere. None of us have any reason to trust news media.
If you have any questions just let me know.
