I had a 4 week safari in Sth Africa last Nov/Dec, certainly it was impossible to use a tripod, even a monopod was impossible as most Safari vehicles are for 7 passengers, so unless you are in a vehicle for only 4 passengers none of these devices are any good even the bean bag would be restricted. I wa regularly in the same vehicle as 2 others and we all had 150-600mm zooms, in fact the 3 different modles that are available, we all hand held 100% of the time and still the images were good, of course having a gimble is if you are in a perfect world and the images should be superior. I used the Tamron G2 150-600mm and very happy with the results. In answer to another question here I now also have the Canon 100-400 mk 2 and the Canon mk111 f1.4 converter and the result are outstanding, just bear in mind it comes at twice the price of the Tamron. Between the 3 different 150-600mm lenses the ONLY difference really is the weight of the Sigma Sport, the Sigma "C" and Tamron G2 are about the same. The Sport is half as heavy again as the other 2. It is however fully weather proofed, the Tamron has some weather proofing and the "C" none. All safaris are dusty and we had some heavy showers as well with no problems on any of the 3 lenses. just keep covered when not using and plenty of lens wipes

What is your opinion of telephoto extenders?  I would use on a Canon 100-400 lens for real long distance shots.
