It’s easier to do things on film. I feel like I have more control to do things when I make prints.

My father was an amazing professional film photographer since the 60s. He kept all his cameras and they're in perfect working condition. Sadly i have very little knowledge and experience on analog cameras. My father has recently passed away about 2 weeks ago and I know for a fact i cant keep everything of his. I wish to find someone who would cherish and love his cameras as much as he did. I can't bring myself to sell them on eBay and shit like that. I plan to study and figure out how to use film cameras but he has one huge camera that it for professional use. If you're interested, please find me on Instagram or Facebook. My name is Cheah Suan Lyn and Im from Malaysia. Even if you're from another country please feel free to contact me. I plan only to sell them to passionate photographers

Brilliant video, steady pace, well edited and just really great for a camera lover and newbie alike! Seriously great point about a culture/community I've shot hundreds of rolls of film now and the thing I love most now is the community, it just feels like we're riding a wave, its such a rewarding medium

Film cameras have advantages that digital cameras simply cant match. Few people mention those advantages in favor to digital industry. in Even the most expensive digital cameras dont match same performance. Here are few massive advantages:
    1. Film cameras can work outside of human civilization. You dont have to worry about batteries You can take your time as much as you want. Where you drain the batteries on the digital camera so you are dependant on batteries.
    2. Film cameras are much more durable and reliable. Especialy fully mechanical ones. You can literaly fry the fragile sensor, chipset can brake, firmware can crash, display can brake, software can have bugs..
    3. You always have physical product on your hands which can be viewed 1000s of years after your death. Where memory cards are way more fragile. And pretty much you have actualy nothing. Information on a card. And that information can be lost, even the card can be lost. Huge memory card which have bilion shots, quadrilion shots… your whole work is on that card, entire life and oops card get broken/lost. Congrats your whole work is gone. You can show negatives but cant show your sd card to anybody which doesnt have card reader.
    4. Colors and performance on film is much better. Vibrant and natural. As much as they try to emulate it on digital simply is not the same.
    5. Fully mechanical film cameras have one more huge advantage over digital. Response and warm up time. Just point and shoot. Where you have to tap the screen of the smartphone, to scrol with finger, to load the app and then to shoot. And film camera just press the trigger and you are done.
But huge problem is that film is expensive, non reusable and limited shots. Also takes time and efforts to develop the film. That disadvantages push the crowd towards the digital world.

Built to last? Lol my favorite Ricoh GR1 is garbage I've been through four GR1 cameras. Unfortunately now they are insanely over priced & not worth buying anymore. Same goes for any compact 35mm camera,…contax t2 etc…

  19. Justin Noker says

Glad to see this was made, recently got my hands on a couple 35mm film cameras that I started trying out, and I have to say, Film just honestly gives the photos a whole different feeling than just using my phone's camera

  25. Jann Adriel Cervo says

Film photography will never die. There will always be people that value good quality and taste.

  26. Benjamin Pavel says

I was always attracted to film cameras then Digital ones and only in last few years I found out why it's because as some of the people already said it give certain characteristics and imperfections that in cameras these days you don't have and have to create in post process.
The grain, the colors that are off a bit, lens imperfections etc. everything gives a little bit of a soul to the photo especially to the one that means a lot to us. 🙂
I still shoot with Digital because of ease and cost but I still have to do it with some of my old vintage lens. Color and Grain can be made in lightroom but lens imperfections/characteristics can't.
My favourite one is still Helios 44-2 as it's the most inexpensive and great for portraits.

But for anyone shooting digital I would recommend to print out your photos. There is something to it when you're able to see it in person and you think to yourself "Wow! I actually made that photo".

  27. Aldo Susanto says

I understand the experience, the story and the feeling of using film cameras. But, I don't think the result is the main consideration. You can easily get the film looks with several tweaks in Lightroom. (or whatever look you want, really). I suppose that's why it's almost impossible to make coins efficiently out of film photography. I guess a lot of people will disagree.

  28. edmendoza photography says

So well done! I’ve come to appreciate the qualities of film photography more everyday.

  29. Qoul Wan says

I really wish people would stop calling it analogue photography, anything that's not digital these days is called analogue.
It's FILM photography, it was never called analogue for the "hundreds of years", as you pointed out, that it's been around before digital came along.

  30. Art Tyree says

Very nicely produced video. Brought back memories of the Leica, Hasselblad gear that I made what are still my best photos with.

  31. afro symphony says

Mahn the aesthetics of fil photography is absolutely surreal!!

  32. jariol says

Film is still alive until you try to process a roll and find out Long's wants to charge you $100 for 36 exposure. Then it's pretty much a Nikon F is just a shelf decoration. I'm serious Long's wanted $100

  33. rotfai45mm says

Did you try cold development with Rodinal at 16 degree celcius ? Try Fomapan 100 in 1+50 Rodinal at 16 degree celcius and develop for 12 minutes . Print the negative on FB paper in your darkroom and wow what a beautiful tonal scale from deep black to bright white and fat gray tone's . Yes use film and print on real silver paper in your darkroom .

  34. Darkeadventures says

Although I now shoot digital I cut my teeth 53 years ago on film, my favourite in later years was ilfochrome, I just liked the colour, eventually I settled on Fuji 200 after Ilford went down, it was the closest I could get, still have a collection of film cameras, this has inspired me to grab a couple and load up, thanks for sharing this…

  35. Ram says

I love film, but not because it is vintage or any of those thoughts, nor because technology is so non spiritual. I love film because it has higher aesthetic quality than digital, because it is richer in textures and ranges and colors. But that doesn't make digital photography a gross thing. I am sure that when film photography was invented there were artists promoting how bad film was compared to the art of painting, how ARTIFICIAL it is to take a photograph compared to the dance of the artist's mind, eye and hand. Now it is film the spiritual thing and digital the artifact. What will happen when another format comes up? Like 3D, for example, what will happen when 3D becomes a strong artistic medium and 2D digital photography becomes the new spiritual thing. I don't think that the vintage quality of film photography should account when compared to digital, I think only its aesthetics should be compared, at least on the artistic field.

Also: This comment is not directed to the video, the video's cool.

Photographing film is nice. But what you do then? You can rely on the shop that you'll have decent copies of your negative film. Then the idea of different films have their own colours is nonsense, the lab machine makes the colours. You can shoot slide. and watch photos with a projector. Or with a loupe. Or you can buy biiig wooden camera, so the slide is big enough to be the picture on the lighted frame on the wall. Or you can kill bored yourself scanning the negs -this is even more stupid than shoot digital.

  39. Arno Muskens says

Nicely done. Brilliant in fact. Thank you. Arno.

  40. Michael says

There isn't a single well seen image in this video. Every photographer in this video is simply a hobbyist ….which is ok. IF one thinks film is the answer…then they'll never get it.

  41. kabeauregardajax says

Nice project. Really nice. I shoot both actually myself. I like to have that opportunity to capture something quickly on digital that i know will just not happen on film. It's just not that easy with film. Yeah i agree about taking your time, and i understand the emotion.. But there's always that other side when you need to capture something else very fast.. And it may take ten photos. And also, on a very low budget. I use the cheapest cameras and the cheapest film. Wish someone would make a film about that away from the pros and the names.

  42. JBulsara A says

  44. Dj Toman says

Take, I'm familiar with your work as Bighead Taco and have enjoyed it for quite some time, but this is your finest work. The interviews, camera close-ups, and time lapses are so well shot and put together to pull the viewer in and move the narrative forward. Congrats on this masterpiece.

And now I want to visit David Chan 陳烘 in Hong Kong!

  45. JuanC Vallejo says

Sería tan grandioso si estuviera subtitulado.

  46. C Y says

i get it , but this is the same thing Charles Baudelaire was talking about in the early 1800's. Digital and film , as we've evolved as a species , has its place . i strongly dislike people who shoot film and talk about it as if it's law. if you shoot digital , print your work and process it to the best of your ability . it's crazy that there this line of demarcation between the two. do what you love and happy shooting everyone !

  47. Scott Hays says
