How to enhance a portrait using GIMP

This is an old video with no sound, new and improved version can be found here:
Portrait in GIMP 2.8 Part 1 Skin |

This is one of the ways you can use to retouch your portraits. I tried to do a gentle edit without turning my model into a doll. Usually I do more work on the entire photo, but it would stretch for another 30 minutes or so. I skipped the part where I was removing all the small blemishes to speed up the video.

If you have any questions regarding this tutorial, please ask 🙂

GIMP is a free software and it can be downloaded from here:

Some good tips there man! Keeping the opacity low, i forget to do that. They should have a botox tool or a big pouty lip plugin available in new gimp releases. Get ahead of adobe for once.

There's absolutely no point making these if you're not going to talk.

Nice showing of features in Gimp.  I don't like the idea of transforming a living beauty into a half dead porcelain doll. I could easily warm up to the first or even second edit of removing some blemishes but whoa there let her stay alive. In the end she looks like an Armani product for a display case. Sorry!

Hi! How are you? Thank you for making this video! I have a question for you, why do you duplicate the portrait? How does that help enhance the image? I am new to the industry so I may be asking you a lot more questions.

I'm sorry, but looks like mobile photos are a real problem. I have tried to improve a few of my old photos taken with mobile (mind you my camera in phone is only 3MP) and I didn't find a good way to do it. So I guess it's better to leave them as they are and buy yourself a bit better camera to take photos 😉

yeah, basically.. when i zoom in like you did its hard to tell what your doing because of the pixels.. lol im new at this.

Hi Ariel, thanks for your comment 🙂 Can you give me more details about what exactly you want to achieve, I mean do you want to reduce colourful dots or noise in the whole photo?

  22. cheyanne ayres says
