The Future Of Professional Photography – FujiFilm GFX 100

29 30

Today we look at the brand new soon to be released FujiFilm GFX 100 Medium Format 100 Megapixel Mirrorless Camera and ask the question, is this the future of “Professional Photography”?

As medium format prices drop due to the forward-thinking folks at FujiFilm will this slowly move portrait, landscape and product professional photographers away from full-frame and over to the medium format systems?

love your no-nonsense tell it like it is revues, thanks

I actually agree that MF is the future of pro photography. I do think Sony is going to land a 60MP FF sensor with some crazy specs that might slow down people switching to MF though. I like how Fuji is shaking things up.

thank you for being one of the few youtube photographers who understand what a medium format camera is built to do. most youtube reviewers talk about it's shortcomings in auto tracking, speed, high-end price point, etc as compared to full-frame cameras. apples to oranges. thank you for laying out a true and informed review

  5. Rob Stammers says

J, I will never be able to afford the Fuji, but I just love listening to you talk about it…that's the reality for me…my Canon T6 and Canon Powershot sx120 will have to do for me. Thanks J.

You are right that there is no excuse to not be shooting in full frame right now as you can pick up a 5D mark II for about 400 dollars. However, to state that medium format will be the only option for serious pro's has its problems in and of itself. Medium format is still a very specialized tool because of the amount of pixels it is moving. You can take a 1D or D5 and do every field of photography. The same cannot be said for the medium formats as they are just outclassed in other areas. Technology still has to bridge the gap in the speed department to handle all of those mega pixels in sports type situations. Once the tech catches up, we may see medium format in a sports camera or we may just see pixel densities that reach medium format level.

Those who can just do..period..Talk means NOTHING ,like OPINIONS,because it varies too much, with no direction,in the camera world..Medium format..For those who compose and know what data archiving and redundancy is.I would get 2 sets of 512 SD cards and a set of 256 cards.Computers???PC i9,with 64GB minimum of RAM,4 SATA drives,at least 3 SSDs,and MDisc burners..Servers or NAS 4xSATA@3TB plus 4X SSD @2-3 TB,running RAID…unconnected, not conected to the Internet second sorting/editing station, with at least 2 MDisc Burners..Then some backup systems/servers in different locations,at least one running a Linux distro…….

Full frame remains the same until mirrorless is as robust and reliable as DSLRs…
APS C hangs around and just gets better for the bulk of the buying crowd..Like the Canon M50,yet way better, like an improved Sony A6400..

4/3 hangs out for a minute, and then Panasonic will put the GH5 tech in their full frame monsters…

Even $10k for a cinema camera like a Canon C300 is cheap. Some of these Arris are running $100k.

  9. Black Warrior Lures says

See, I don't understand why Olympus didn't go this route instead of that big M43 camera.

  10. Steven Waldstein says

While money making pros may take the step up to 100 Mpixels I might get a 50 Mpixel medium format for high res work if I do that. I think one of the bigger issues will be the cost of MF glass compared to even the very best FF glass that will be the barrier although there is all this new higher quality FF mirrorless glass where they want $1800 to $2500 for. If you were trying to get that for MF what will it cost. I have no idea.

  11. K. Adam Christensen says

I have the 50r and I love it. I had the A7Riii, so 50 MP vs 42 MP isn't that much. But man, the color depth that comes out of the Fuji is great. The focus is slow, but the continuous is just not usable for me. The fact that this will have PDAF sounds amazing.

  12. EE CC says

No offense, but can we skip the whole tea description at the beginning of every video? Let's get to the point! 🙂

  13. Eric Jennings says

I have a different opinion, I actually think the portability will win in the future. Of course there will always be usage cases for big sensor big camera work, however I think portable cameras rule the future

  14. Sean Sauer says

Full frame sensors with more megapixels is the future not bigger sensors. Medium format is getting cheaper because they are trying to increase sales… at least Fuji is. Medium format is a cool niche but it's bigger and more expensive across the board when the average viewer can't tell the difference in the images it's not worth the investment. Everything is moving to smaller and compact. I don't think medium format will go away but calling it the "future" is WAY off target. Pros will go for future models like the mirrorless Canon 5DSR, same benefits of medium format at half the cost.

  15. Straight Out of Camera says

Lloyd Chambers reports that the Panasonic S1R provides more resolution and less noise in "multi-shot" mode than even the Hassy 100mp. Provided, of course, that nothing moves during the multi-shot process and you use high-end lenses. One can get the same result, IMO, by stitching pics (the "panorama" method) which is also a pain. Medium format may be the future for high-end pro applications and large prints, but at the end, it's the Public (the Market) that decides what they need and what's good enough. The Public doesn't have and it's not interested in buying 8K monitors to avoid too much scrolling of large images, the Public doesn't care about large prints, huge/heavy bodies with expensive lenses etc. Hence, all camera sales keep going down. NOW, IF Fuji develops a 100mp "R" type compact camera, that'll be sweet – otherwise these will be "trophy" cameras only, at best.

Fuji knew that hey were going to do this, which is why they stayed out of the full frame game, there was no need. They will capture the market they were after and they will drive Canon and Nikon into this market kicking and screaming further deluding their prospective brand and forcing them to make choices they are not ready for yet, especially since neither of them have a pro level mirrorless on the market yet. Is this the reason Nikon changed their mount and have that special patent? With Canon and Nikon just getting into mirrorless, really, this gives Fuji even more time to extend their lead and in a minute, they will even give Sony a reason to ponder and I think they have?

Could this be the reason Sony is not coming out with new models as quickly as before so that they can come up with an answer, especially with Sony providing sensors to everyone? Sony is in a better position with more money than Canon, Nikon or Fuji and without a DSLR market to discontinue.

The little company with the big ideas is going to drive someone out of business, could it be Panasonic or Olympus or even both? With Fuji soon to have three medium format cameras in the market and pushing that technology to its limits, will they be the Sony of medium format? JC you are not just on to something you are 100 percent correct and now almost everyone will see it.

Fuji isn’t in this for a race to the bottom with full frame, they are in it to separate the pro market and if you can’t afford 10,000 dollars, hey no problem, we have other medium formats for you starting at 4,000 dollars, medium D850 prices (which you can get for less if you buy used and Fuji will probably lower)and killing any d5 or d6, except for speed while improving the tech further making it harder for the competitors to catch up. Fuji is taking the steps of a market leader not a follower, (not to mention that they now own a printing division ie Xerox) other camera companies better wake up, if not they will either get down or lay down.

The two companies in the best position right now are Sony that controls the sensor market and has the best mirrorless tech over all and Fuji that has the best mindset and will bring other medium format companies like Hassel Blad and Phase One to their knees, literally controlling the medium format market.

  17. Rene Staempfli says

FF seems to be the sweet spot for the 3 big players. This is where currently the R&D money is spent. Fuji as a smaller player goes for MF to compete against PhaseOne and Haselblad. That's good for some pro's that need MF. Will most pro's move to MF in the future? If MF can cover what FF covers today, yes. But this again depends on the major players, as they have the resources to develope the needed technology.

  18. iggytse says

Assuming the camera can use large mount full frame lens then it could possibly be a game changer. Especially if it shoots video that small budget movie makers make ditch 8K Red cameras. They would just have to make sure the colour science gives skin tones that cinematic look.

  19. UK MEDIA says

people can't think out the box like fuji can, i was told my galaxy note 1 wouldn't fit in a pocket & large smart phones wouldn't catch on, even apple said at on time they'd never produce a 6" iphone ??
the focuse points on the new mf fuji will be near edge to edge, ibis etc, you stay in your box & your hasselblad slow one focus point dinosaur, I'll embrace the fuji open box world of possibilities other ludites can't live with.

  20. Jog S says

Example: I will take a still photo with my G9 (MFT) and a Leica Lens in high resulution mode and the same pic with a MF camera and both pictures will be printed in best quality and large size. I bed nobody in the whole world can see a different and can tell to 100% which camera was used.
NOT the size counts, what you can produce with your gear counts. 😍

  21. Jog S says

Not the size of the sensor make a Pro to a Pro, the fact photography it's his Job and he will be payed for this.
Its magic but a Pro can produce in the past also great photos with 4mpix cameras.
At the end only the outcome counts, not the camera to shoot it. 😎

  22. Stephen DeNagy says

I totally agree. And it will further erode Nikon and Canon’s high end. Canikon are losing at one end to Sony FF inexpensive excellence, at another to Fuji’s APS-C, and now at the high end pro to Fuji. This is great for photography but once again, Canikon will have to innovate. Oh, and Hasselblad. This will REALLY hurt them. The only wildcard about Fuji (and hope for Hasselblad) is optics. The Fuji lenses will have to be good enough to use all those megapixels! That said, I think the leaders at Canon will need a stiff drink after Fuji’s announcement!

Graphene camera sensor when it comes . Will seems like the mirrorless sensor will behave like a. Medium format camera . and the cell phone will become more interest

  24. LordArioh says

I got 10 other ways to make money, so planning to be enthusiast for the rest of my life. Only if Canon one day comes up with affordable MF, maybe. Tho all new lenses.. So far considering 5Ds for timelapses, so I could crop in and have some fun)

  25. 5 Star says

Medium format does 4K 10 bit 4:2.2 and you say it's amazing? But the Nikon Z6 does the same and you say nothing. That's the bias I was talking about.

  26. 5 Star says

That tea boast estrogen so be careful unless that's what you want. Is medium format fast enough? I say bring it on but it seems Sony, Nikon and Canon have issues pushing full frame sensors to the max and performing correctly. I'm all for medium format if it runs correctly. Also, what about video?

  27. Elias Pap says

My 1Dsmk3 cost me $1100 back in 2008, 21mega pixels wooohoo! Cant even get $600 bucks for it today, but to be honest i wouldn’t sell it, its a great backup camera.

  28. John Stuedle says

Again we agree, my friend. 10K for a 100 MP is "Cheap". If I were still in the line of work where I needed such resolution, I'd be standing in line to take a much closer look. BTW, as an aside, my first DSLR was the D1 in 1989, 2.5 MP. Not a show stopper, but when it was new, there were no digital forums, no vlogs, and digital was considered a fad that would pass. But that camera was a great teach/learning tool to study and shorten the learning curve. Remember PS 5? 🙂
