Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, which is based in Oregon in 1850, is particularly known for the unusual choreography by Michael Kidd, which makes dance numbers out of such mundane frontier pursuits as chopping wood and raising a barn
To perform the electrifying dance numbers and grueling action sequences, choreographer Michael Kidd wanted dancers to portray all six of Adam Pontipee’s rough and tumble brothers. MGM Studios, however, wanted actors already under contract to MGM — Jeff Richards (a former baseball player), and Russ Tamblyn (a gymnast) — to be cast as two of the brothers. The other four brothers were portrayed by professional dancers — Matt Mattox, Marc Platt, Tommy Rall, and Jacques d’Amboise. All four balanced on a beam together during their famous barn-raising dance.
The movie was listed as number 464 in Empire magazine’s list of the 500 greatest films of all time.
Oscar nominee for Best Picture in 1954, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers won NBR Award Top Ten Films (1954), Oscar for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture and WGA Award for Best Written American Musical among others.

When I first saw this movie as a kid, I was appalled at Adam's proposal to Millie, and further shocked when she accepted his lame, but straightforward offer.
Best dance sequence EVER. Period.
The leader of the Jets
Had dinner with Jacques D'Amboise a few months ago and discussed this sequence throughout the evening. Much to tell but one of the challenges was dealing with the edits and pauses that required the cameras to be reset and then the dancers going back into the dynamic rythm and pacing they had just left. Russ was discovered in a bit role in a teen drama and kept the crew entertained with his gymnastics. Each of the dancers was ballet experienced and the set was cardboard and lumber… note the dirt that was spread to kick up when then slid beneath the sawhorse. Also notice how flexible the dance floor was. It was set like a trampoline and sent the leaps and jumps sky high. Few of the stunts had to be reshot many times. The issue was never falling… it was balance and breaking character to stay on the rolling or balancing "beams'. Hitting their marks was the big challenge… sliding, leaping, spinning … all together left some short or others way off their mark. And one false move and collisions spread like wildfire. More later….

It must' ve been a lot of work to paint all of that landscape in the background. Amazing craftsmanship.
One never gets tired of watching this sequence. The brilliant Tommy Rall (red shirt) was considered a better dancer than Astaire or Kelly by no less a luminary than Donald O'Connor.

The orange shirt guy was the only brother who was not a professional dancer, that is why he stays in the background in this scene while the others do the more physically demanding and technical dance sequences.
