Thanks for the demo! I actually just bought one of these to put on my metalworking mill. Do they happen to mention if the reflective tape needs to be on a dark background? I am assuming there needs to be some contrast between the tape and the rest of the rotating part.

this was informative video. Is the tape generic 3M reflective tape or was it some kind of proprietary reflective tape? I wonder if it will work with smaller bits of tape and what is the top end speed it will be able to read.

I bought one for $12 delivered from HK after seeing this vid. It works great. The grill on my JD 318 is stuck so we reached up from below to stick the tape and it shoots right through the mesh. Never mind we had to turn on the PTO to get the tape spinning: the auger on the snow blower isn't that scary, just don't fall into it!

A good addition for the tool box and at a good price.

i use antique mechanical tacs! i have 2! they work fine! all tou do is hold them up to the indent in the end of the engines or motors shaft and count how many times the 2 small dots pass each other for 1 min! its actually pretty accurate! i tested it on a 1750rpm motor and got exactly 1750rpm! they are ment for hit and miss engines but work fin on any engine! btw your briggs coldstarts better than my fh! mine hates cold! the wi is good in cold! how do you hook up the drill to start like that?
