If you’re going to spend an extra $300 for a modular camera which snaps onto the back of your (already expensive) smartphone, shouldn’t that modular camera outperform the camera built into your phone? If you slap a name like Hasselblad on a photography product, we’re going to have exceedingly high expectations. Let’s see how the Hasselblad True Zoom compares against the built in camera found on the Moto Z Force!

I just got the this mod and because it's 2019 I got it for $99.00. I intend to use it for mountain range and canyon shots. Since I got my Z3 at a great discount it makes sense. However I would not pay full retail for the mod.

I can get it for 50 bucks now.

I feel bad for the Moto Mods team. They're clearly trying very hard to make these work. But the third party manufacturers don't seem to really care.

Apparently people don't know the difference between digital and optical zoom, I'm not going to zoom in on something in a room with an optical when I can use digital, try zooming in on an animal or mountain or even some boat on a lake with your digital and see how that turns out, optical is the only way to go for clearer pictures.

Only plus, is the you can take this into a music concert, and not your point and shoot,

    Yup totally agree

This mod is now in the $150 range on Amazon. Think I'll still pass on it.

@Pocketnow , at 0:36 you display the Moto Z2 Force Edition stock camera with 21mp, which is incorrect – it has the same 12 mpx as Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mod camera. Source here: https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_z2_force-8693.php

I will admit that the automatic modes are disappointing, but when you override them and use it properly, the results are above anything you can get from the built in camera. The superior optical quality when zooming is the best reason to use the mod, though. I love it for portraits at iso 100 at 1/30th with the xenon flash! The internal camera can't touch the picture quality. You can can see people's eye color and every eyelash!

What is your opinion now since you can pick it up for in $100?

Terrible implementation. For the size and cost, I would much rather have seen something closer to a Sony X100 with a much larger sensor (1") and much larger aperture (1.8 at the wide end.) Sure, it wouldn't give you the 10x optical zoom, but 3x optical with 3x digital on the larger sensor (especially if the resolution were around 20MP) would have been good enough on the long end. On the wide end, though, that would be a great street cam.

I'm fairly certain that we will see flagships coming out with 3-4 lenses/sensors in different focal lengths, each with a relatively wide aperture (certainly, much larger than the one on this mod.) There are already dual-camera setups with normal/wide and normal/tele, so three with wide/normal/tele should be relatively easy to do.

    Hey
What's the name of that white samsung galaxy camera lens mod?

    Just saved me 💰. Thanks

  17. Britt Ridenbaugh says

Yeah I can't believe I wasted money on this. I noticed right after I bought it that the phone camera almost always produced better quality pics on its own. I never attach the hassleblad…maybe have used it twice. Waste of money

Awesome honest review. I had doubts on what mod to get first for my moto z play. Couldn't decide between the projector or this camera mod. You made my choice easier. So easy that I might not even get the camera mod anymore, the performance was so disappointing.

    Once again, awesome video.

any point and shoot camera will outperform a fraking phone.

Wish I'd watched this before I bought it.

    How’s it perform on Snapchat?

  23. TrendSpice Entertainment. says

So basically the mod sucks and the only good use for it is taking high res. zoomed pics

This is indeed very disappointing. I have been using the Sony QX100 for several years now and that is truly an upgrade, hell that thing can produce some seriously good images with its huge 1" sensor and the low light performance of that thing is simply unmatched. I must say that while something like the QX100 didn't make much sense to the people or the reviewers back then, it absolutely has made a huge sense for me as I use it far more than any other cam I own. Specially ever since the software has been greatly improved. I do agree that the slowness of the wireless connectivity does come in the way but once you know it as a matter of fact and move past that issue, what that thing can deliver is nothing short of being awesome. I truly wish Sony to consider releasing an improved version of the same thing, though I know that ironically its never going to happen. Fingers cross
