A initially learned photography as a kid shooting black & white then developing the photos in a dark room, that was a magical time and sparked my interest in photography. As I got older I dabbled in digital photography but wasn't until my kids were born that i really started to get an active interest back in it all.

Error: the description of a roundhouse in Martinsburg is not West Virginia at that time, it was Virginia. Yes, eventually it became WV in 1863 during the Civil War. Suggestion: write it as VA (WV) as done by genealogists.
Eclectic, to say the least. What a visibly awful time to live. Look at the faces. All joy is gone.

Great pics! Looking at those layers of heavy, often woolen, garments and considering what was the norm back then for bathing regularly and deodorant, there musta been some real B.O., LOL.

Rare photos; beautiful early examples of the artistry that went into composing, and technically creating these works. Thank you to whoever put this together providing detailed captions for all the photos that described time and place. Nothing worse than un-captioned historic photos that allow the people and places to be lost to future knowledge.

There was no such entity known as West Virginia in 1858.
West Virginia did not exist until 1863. In 1858 it was all Virginia .
the year 1857 appears a lot. hmmm….wonder why.
