***OVERVIEW***

So you’ve got the lead, maybe even had a meeting with a prospective couple and they’re considering booking you. But then, the dreaded question of offering them a discount comes up.

In this video, I’ll chat about what to say if a wedding couple asks for a discount and how to avoid it happening in the first place.

These days, everyone wants to feel like they’re getting a great deal and the most value they can from you as a wedding photographer.

Even if you’ve got an incredible reputation or they’ve been referred to you by a trusted friend or wedding coordinator, many couples will still ask for a discount.

First and foremost, you need to stay positive and professional, rather than getting offended or start questioning why they are even asking for it.

It’s really important that you know what the couple’s wedding photography budget is before you have a meeting with them.

Always send them a package proposal prior to meeting to give them a rough idea of what you charge and what they might get for the budget they are considering.

If a couple does ask for a discount on your package prices, your response will depend largely on how much you want to shoot that wedding; such as whether it’s during the off-season or you’re hurting for some income and need to make a living.

It’s important to be strong and value yourself, rather than just caving into the pressure. Don’t be shy to let them know you appreciate they are considering you.

But to be fair to other clients and the time and effort that goes into your wedding photography business, you can’t offer a discount.

Many couples are just testing the waters by asking for a discount in the first place, with the idea that there’s no harm in trying, so they might be happy to go ahead and book anyway.

But if a prospective couple does push for a discount, there are a few alternatives to just agreeing to whatever they demand.

Perhaps suggest a price that meets somewhere in the middle or add an extra hour of coverage that won’t cost you much out-of-pocket in exchange for keeping the package price as is.

Whatever compromise you come to, make sure it’s detailed on the invoice you send to the couple so they appreciate the discount you’ve given them.
