I made a video a couple of years ago saying that it’s a great idea for serious portrait photographers to go and get their portraits taken, because it gives them empathy for people who sit in front of their lens on a regular basis. So in this video I head through to Tommy Reynolds’ studio for a portrait session. He and I both give some tips and share our thoughts on why teaching yourself to work well with people will make you a better portrait photographer.

Share it on if you found it helpful.

I would love to see you collab with some people with a 100% different style. I'd love to hear you bounce ideas off some different people and styles.

    Well, aren't you charming!

So much truth in this video…. I think everyone should do a course learning counseling, it changes you and makes you have more empathy, even if you don't plan on becoming a counselor.

A lot of selfies are mirror images so everyone is used to seeing themsleves flipped horizontally and therefore they think they dont look right when they see themselves as everyone else see's them

1:50 “…(it’s) less about the lighting we use…” he said within a beautifully orchestrated Rembrandt lighting set up. 😄✌️

Edit: Another excellent video. Such a great channel 👍

Dude – you're awesome! As well as being incredibly informative, I was deeply touched by this video. The photos are really great, but the lighting when you're driving in the car (4:39) is even more flattering on you. I wonder if there's a way to get that same effect in a studio.

Amazing video Sean, you put so much work and care into your content – thank you so much! As a beginner your channel has been a extraordinary resource, again thank you for the generosity with sharing your knowledge and experience ❤️

As usual, I was glued to every minute of this video. I've always thought I've had some degree of empathy towards others, but when my mum – who was also my best friend – passed away 18 months ago, I really started to realise what empathy actually was. Even though I shoot my photos nowadays with my smartphone, I'm going to take a lot of the things you said in this video, and apply them when I make someone else's portrait.

Hey Sean, thanks so much for this video. Brilliant on many levels! You're totally right about the need for empathy of course, and you've given me some new ideas about how to deal with the 'I never look good in photos' syndrome.

This is not just techniques but this is also life lessons which i really don't see in every photography channels. I'm a landscape photography enthusiast and now found the beauty of portraiture. This is truly a magnificent piece and in my opinion the best portrait advise i've come across. Thank you so much sir tucker for this!

Hello Sean. Was wondering if you can have a video on how you do your commerce. Not just the web portion, but how to create and set up the print for delivery and or whichever serve you do. I need to monetize what I photograph and have a means to deliver prints. thx so much!!

I think a good hairdresser and a good portrait photographer share similar traits, empathy and working with the client, understanding what they are looking for from the experience and working to draw that out. I wonder if your "squashed head" lady had similar problems when she went to a salon – never quite satisfied that she looked her best at the end of her session…..
