I only recently have started getting paid to take pictures. I had done it for free for years. I recently took the pictures of my niece's baptism as a gift and they loved them so I put myself out there and made a photography account. Since I live in an Italy city that gets a lot of tourists so I am getting a little bit of work. I am now charging 50 euros for a 2 hour shoot and about 25 edited pictures.

Great videos on these topics. My daughter recently was asked to wear a clothing designers brand on social media however, shes very new at this so we were wondering what would be a reasonable price to charge for this considering it would be the first.. thank you in advance 🙂

thanks for the tips. sometimes i feel guilty for giving friends a price for photos but you reassured me that i need to value my time and work that goes into shooting and editing

thank you for this!! you’re literally preaching about devaluing work, i had this friend who is a musician and they would always hit me up saying ‘lets shoot’ and me being the good friend i was, was like ok!!! but they never payed me or even offered…once i finally came to my sense i gave them my rates and i got that ‘oh i know someone who will do it for free’, im v good at fucking myself over hahaha, learned the hard way unfortunately! again truly appreciate this video and all of ur others! ur a gem 💞

On friends and family trying to use you! I'm not a photographer but I do work around photographers and videographers. Someone who works at a high level will have high prices, they don't build their equipment stash and lifestyle by getting bogged down by freebies!

  16. AMIT KOLTE says

Awesome video, i am exactly facing the same issue as you mentioned, people are just asking to take their functions photos for free and i am not able to ask them for money as they are friends. People should understand that photography is a costly affair and we pay a lot in equipments. Anyways felt nice after watching this video.

  17. littlelemon1012 says

this is so helpful!! I'm starting to get friends asking for their portraits and I would love to start charging for my work. I never really knew what a good rate was, but this helped me!

  18. Nadybel Marie says

Yes! I wish people would understand that photography is not just taking a photo, IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT! Like you said its your time ( choosing, editing, deciding and hours behind a computer) additional of the photography session.  Also the creative process behind the photography sessions on how you imagine that or how you get frustrated when something is not working at the moment and you have to wing it and make it work because you only have certain time etc, etc. But yeah basically everything you said is true. VALUE.

Thank u so much. Im an office worker and photography is my passion, i usually shoot my friends, fam for free, that's cool. but some of my friends, not BFF, when i told them ab the price, they always said thatL" oh, what, i think u shoot it for free?" , " no way, im gioing to studio for better pics", and..so on.. but it's ok, i dont care and still got another cute clients, they believe in me and satisfied with the price. Im Vietnamese, using D3200 w 1.8G 50mm and price 20$ for 10 edited pics and ab 500 stocks. im ok w it.

  27. marisathebibliophile says

This cleared up a lot of confusion for me! I am literally JUST starting out. Like this week and have texted a few friends to see if I can take their picture to just build my skill level and actually practice using my camera and then we also get to hang out like win win. This is to build up my portfolio and like doing shoots for free with people coming to you vs you seeking them out makes so much sense. Thanks so much!

  28. Mikayla King says

Jessica Whitaker is such a huge role model. Your tips really help me to remember to value my work and my time! Thank you and keep up the great work, you're amazing!

  30. Alicia H says

Thank you!! I have been struggling to figure out what I need to do price wise. I have already seen people come to me for free photography. I did a boudoir shoot for my best friend and I did her work for free! I don't regret it but that's about the only person I'll do free work for!

  31. filmsbymillie says

thank you for this video!!!! because i'm so young everyone assumes i'll just do photography for free and it's so frustrating :')

  32. Janovin S says

    Helped a lot

  33. Monashee says

Such a great video. Yes… doing photos for free for people in exchange for being able to use it in your portfolio doesn't make any sense. It's hard to say no… but it really does de-value the industry.
