DPReview TV: Canon EOS RP Review

45 38

The EOS RP is Canon’s second full frame mirrorless camera, built around the new RF mount, and comes with an aggressive launch price of $1300. While there are some inevitable compromises to be made at this cost, Chris and Jordan discovered that there’s a lot to like about this pint-sized full-framer.

I need a nikon version of this. I only shoot portraits and don't need all the other bells and whistles..

  2. Akhil Ghosh says

Rec room looks interesting, there is nothing much to see in Calgary basically

Hey Chris, what cloth did you wear? I love it!

…got same results from Nikon d3300….not so fancy…but same results…. another toy…nice but useless… better to buy good glass

The camera market is HANDS DOWN the most frustrating market ever. It’s complete non sense and it is honestly just a bit shady. In 2019 we are stuck with a brand new camera that has all these limitations when you can spend $899 on Fuji xt30 and get almost the same functions as the Sony a7iii minus full frame.. idk for someone like me it’s impossible to make a decision and be happy either I’m spending way more money than I should or I buy something like this RP and feel completely shorted and frustrated.

Thanks for the review… Where can I find that page where I could compare pushing and pulling shots from different cameras? (at 5:05)

  7. Erik says

Here because I preordered the G95 but camera conspiracies.l made a good point; for 100 bucks more you can get this. Any advice?

  8. Khin Dara says

I bought price 2035$ last morning about Canon EOS RP +Len 24-105

  9. Craig Scarlett says

Here's the problem with spec heads. If I show you an image that tells a great story and looks great and don't tell you which camera it was taken on? Where do we end up? I look at end results. Spec heads need something that is quantifiable. Your average consumer and target market for this camera could care less.

i am confused between 6d mark ii & RP, i need comparatively low iso noise, greater color & contrast. i don't need 4k or 6.5 fps..which one should i buy? plz suggest me

  11. Hung Giang says

$1200 full frame too good to be true. And it is.

Good review and helpful. I know you have good professional integrity and this is a good example of doing a good review which is to sit with the potential buyer of the product and quickly take them through all the major points they would come up against if they could afford to do the same. As you know your genre of professional reviewers is littered with examples of compromised individuals who go easy on these cameras because they are being wined and dined by canon Sony Nikon at some beautiful location and its subtle but the influence of such a relationship is one i hold very near the surface when watching you two review things and this is a good example of holding a new product to task and i appreciate it. I want sony to give me new cameras to play with every time they release something, but since they dont and they give them to you all i am grateful when the videos are not just about how cool it is to get free stuff and look at this cool feature. This one was about how does this stack up in relation to the other options at that price point overall for people like myself where it is a huge deal to commit one way or the other because money is tight so to buy one thing is to lose access to another, that’s opportunity cost and where you two are one of the better reviewers especially Jordan has the curmudgeon thing down so i always know he will speak truth to power as it were. So really this is me seeing what i think is one of your better videos critically and encourage you to take that moment before each review as a team and just remember how subtle is the creep of sunny tropical locations (or even the subtle creep of free gear in the frozen tundras of canada or wherever you all are from – i dont know i am from the United States so the only way we learn geography is if we happen to invade a country) and you certainly gain my loyalty when you are willing to give an in-depth and balanced view as well as being able to step back and compare it to the Panasonic etc. . Keep up the great work.

  13. Jorge Martinez says

I'm keeping my panny g85 for video. No need to downgrade to this.

  14. andrew moung says

will keep all EF L lens except the 70-200 I will sell the EF and get RF lens just for the size and weight saving.

  15. andrew moung says

just don't do full 4 stop off pictures. how often do you do that anyway. back in film days, that would be a bad pic to begin with anyway. just do photo stacking for the HDR scenes. it is work around and way more clean.when you are too far aside, how narrow depth of field will make your face vs eye out of focus? probably not at all. only when you are close the eye focus will make sense for narrow depth of field.that is why all these neck picking for a 1300 camera is just buzz for 99% of people.

  16. Grant says

Every single time Canon releases a new camera I am disappointed. They never seem to make it worth the upgrade from their existing lineup, and if they do, it's usually way overpriced.

  17. Jason Jasons says

Always love this guys honest review👍👍

  18. Joey Cordeiro says

It's cheaper to buy the anker power core+ than to buy more canon batteries. And you can use that to charge anything. XD

  19. Kamil Lisowski says

Here we are Canon give us Worse dynamic range FF than old A6500 apsc OMG

  20. G L says

I really like the quality of the 1080p video
Is it worth it for only shooting 1080p?

  21. Garett Harnish says

While it might be hard to recommend coming from the 6D2, it feels like a major update to my 5D2 …

  22. Dima 135 says

When this camera was announced coming with the adapter and grip, I thought I would get this as a cheaper replacement to my 6D than the R and see what Canon will really bring out later on, but both cameras simply do not offer what I want and I did not want to wait anymore. The only thing I'd probably miss about Canon is the great touch interface and simpler menu system.

I ended up getting the Sony A7 III and the Metabones V adapter which thankfully works great with my Tamron 70-200mm. The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is amazing as well and it is tremendous how much lighter it is compared to the Canon 24-70 f/2.8. For a thousand more bucks, the IBIS, continuous shooting, eye tracking, video capabilities, etc, were worth it for me. In the end, whatever pro mirrorless model Canon would have put out for $3k+, the A7 III does it great for $1k less.

  24. Peter Carpowitz says

This is sad…. great lens and really poor bodies…

  25. David Ramos says

Meanwhile filmmakers always choose Canon? The 2018 Best Documentary Oscar was all shot on Canon. All the other nominations were also shot on Canon. Why?

  26. Vitor Manes says

    4:40 OMG! That`s just sad!

  27. Kotodama Midnight says

the sugarcoating of criticism of the shit camera is a turn off..

  28. Ramage7070 says

You appear to have a clear bias towards Canon. Watched a lot of your reviews and for other brands you have a very consistent style of saying something negative followed by something positive. I find this to be Informative and does not come across as mean spirited. That changes for Canon reviews as you often start positive and end negative. Shame really cause I really love the rest of your reviews with a mix of local attractions.

  29. Yasinzaii says

I bought canon 77d with 10-18 mm lens and today I uploaded my first ever vlog. I am very exited 🙂🙃

  35. David Wheat says

Most photographers on YouTube think that the only place people see their photos/video is on YouTube. That is totally wrong because the place where just about everyone currently views photos and video is on Facebook. For some reason Facebook videos have to be converted to a maximum of 720P and you cannot view photos full screen any longer. The only people viewing your content on YouTube is, other YouTube content creators, or wannabe creators. You people live in a small universe and your concerns are not shared by most people that consume non professional photos or videos. Most people shoot photos and video meant to be shown on Facebook, not YouTube. Most people buy cameras to take photos and video to show to their friends or relatives and not to make money by getting people to subscribe and watch your content. Those are the people buying the cameras you are reviewing here and that is where the money will be spent by consumers. The market camera manufactures are after now, are those people who want to upgrade from their smartphones, not those who make content for YouTube.

  36. Philip Chavez says

Well done. I am going to get one because I have too many Canon lenses. Shooting right now with the Sony A7Rii and love it but still want Canon…

  37. Joe S says

    OMG Canon sucks so bad…

  38. Jason Lucas says

thanks for the great review guys, was interested in this body as an introduction to canon mirrorless but the lack of dynamic range is a deal breaker in this day and age.

  39. The Local Native says

    I have a rebel body 😉

  40. Paulo Carvalho says

I think that what most people here on YouTube don't understand is that there are professionals making lots of money using these cameras as photography tools. This EOS R still beats the sony in usability and reliability with an amazing already lens selection.

  41. Caleb Wojcik says

To be honest, the 4K 24p footage looks pretty great. Just gotta be in ideal or controlled lighting situations. Thanks for the detailed review gents.

  42. Donose Ciprian says

What is battery life on video?

  43. MattieCooper says

Please help. Is Jordan talk about the Sony DSC-TX30 (???) I'm a bit unclear here.

  44. Dwayne Roberts says

So I am upgrading from a PowerShot point and shoot camera to a DSLR. I was converted to
the Canon 80D, but someone told me to check out the new EOS RP. I am into Architecture
but I do small wedding/graduation ceremonies. I also love taking it hiking to do landscape,
wildlife, and macro photography.  Which camera would you recommend? Which is more sustainable with a low budget?

  45. hung le says

Sony fans are more active than any fanclub in the world lol. Remember, your camera specs do not make you professional photographer 😉
