When I take pictures I don't often know what the end use is, so I don't really think about the proportion. I just try to give myself enough breathing room to crop. You can crop in photo editing, or in video editing. If you know ahead of time that you want your photos at 16:9 and your camera allows you to do that, then yes, shoot in 16:9 (not many cameras have this ability tho')

Quality: if shooting jpgs, always the best. For image size, bigger or equal to 1920 x 1080 pixels (HD). Does that help

Really enjoying this series, Marlene. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. Question: When taking photos for use in HD video, is it best to shoot in 16:9 or shoot in 4:3 mode & then croping the 4:3 image to fit properly in the HD video? What quality would you shoot at for this scenario? Oops, that was two questions, wasn't it? 🙂
