I HATE Dark "Background Colors" on Photography Websites, Agree or Disagree: Rapid Fire Critique

39 33

Does the Background Color of your photography website really matter? I personally do not like dark background websites for showcasing my work.

The reason being is I feel like it takes away from your images and also makes the text harder to read. In this case we had a grey background and I felt it made the site look amateurish where the images definitely are not.

One bit if critique of that web site from me: I think the background on the cover page interferes with the text. Perhaps the text could be in an opaque box or something.

I don't like black background either. It makes the type VERY difficult to read. I am fine with a website being a little different, but dark backgrounds don't function. Though I'm one to be very tired of the same photography name design that everyone has – that wedding calligraphy logo. That's my personal taste.

The photos are beautiful! What bothers me is that they are displayed so close together. I think they would look nicer if there were more "breathing room" between them.

Do you have any recommendations for domain names, Fro? Should I just use my name or should I put photography in front of my name? .com, .net, etc.?

  27. Jonathan Bondu says

I totally disagree with you. I largely prefer a gray background. but I think it needs to be a perfectly neutral gray, it has a few technical advantages. when the eyes goes from the photos to the menu, there is less change in the amount of light they recieve, that means the eye will have less work to adapt. the other aspect that is not well none, is that when people have mild eye condition : astigmatism, hypermetropia… the blur crated by the luminous zones tends to cover darker zones and white background may tend to cover a bit the picture. last but not least gray will give an extra reference on wich the eye will tend to correct itself that may help to slightly compensate the probably badly calibrated screen that the client is using. and as a last note, I find this gray truly elegant. for me it is a big plus and makes me value more his work. plus it reminds of professional software, so it reaaly gives me a strong feel of confidence in this guy's work.

a black background shouts "my website hasn't made it out of the 1990s and I don't care". people want to imagine what the images look like on their wall. not many of your potential buyers have black walls
