The flash can be creative but most amateurs ignore its use.
Most original external flashes offer high speed sync. The flash illuminates very frequently and permits faster than the typical 1/250th sec shutter speeds. However the amount of light that the flash produce is lower in high speed sync mode.
Nearly all integrated flash of cameras doesn't offer the high speed sync. The external flashes have their own source of power and the high speed sync is very demanding with energy.
Cameras with leaf shutter permit faster flash speeds without the use of the high speed sync. The Sony RX1 series and the Hasselblad cameras are some of the cameras which have leaf shutter instead of a shutter with curtain.

I'm not sure if Mark answers questions on here but here goes: How did you know to set your aperture at f/18? Also, you talked only about slowing down your shutter speed, but not about adjusting the aperture. Why one over the other? They should produce the same result, right?

How come the background was a bit blurry with f/18? I thought such aperture made everything sharp.

I wonder how did you manage to show the model only while everything else at the back is completely black. I tried doing this, yet I can still see other objects at the back. Do I have to change my ISO settings? I used 400 ISO. Or is it related to the lens I am using? Currently using 18-55

Hi , My camera d3100 doesn't allow me to go higher than the x-syn speed which is 1/200th sec. Whenever I switch on the flash in manual mode the shutter speed becomes 1/200 sec. What shall I do in this case?

For a beginner the Canon T4i is a fantastic camera with a bunch of features for a very small capital investment. If you have enough for a high quality EF-L lens, I would suggest buying the 24-70mm F2.8L If you don't have that kind of money, consider buying a t4i kit on ebay for about $900 with 2 EFS lenses. Personally I would rather have 1 quality lens that you can keep forever and use with a pro camera. Don't invest too much in the body, invest in the glass. If money is no object- get both
