I bought the Canon EOS RP! Here’s why I bought it and why I think the Canon EOS RP is the best camera for travel video and photography in 2019.

The Canon EOS RP has been getting a lot of criticism, but I think it’s a great little camera. It doesn’t excel at anything – which is why so many photographers and videographers aren’t loving it – but it does everything well. That means it’s not the best camera for filmmakers or niche photographers. But, if you’re looking for an all in one camera for photography and videography, it’s hard to beat.

The Canon EOS RP is also a great camera for travellers because it’s small, lightweight and affordable. It does everything many of us need – including people who make money from video and photography! – it just doesn’t have any extras. I think it’s ideal for YouTubers who also want to dabble in photography or photographers who want to dabble in video.

In short, I love the Canon EOS RP. I had my reservations about buying it but I love having a single set-up that works for both photo and video.

    P. S. If you want to see all the camera and accessories I carry right now, I've updated my gear page: http://bit.ly/aljgear

Hey Jodie, thank you so much for being so clear about this camera. I saw multiple reviews and they confused me so so much. But I think I should go ahead and buy this camera.
One thing I need to know, how is it's performance in low-light? Can you share a few photos? I am looking for super gorgeous image quality through this camera. Lemme know if my expectations are set on the right product. πŸ™‚

Thanks for the review! I just purchased an RP last week and I’m loving it!

Canon needs more light and small f1.8 lens for EOS R and R

One of the more practical summaries I’ve seen of the RP. I currently have a 7D and I’m trying to decide whether to spend my money on the RP or on the 7D Mark II, or to wait another year and hope for a 7D Mark III. What’s your β€” or anyone else’s view who may be reading this β€” on the relative trade-offs?

I also bought this last minute before I switch to sony. A replacement for my heavy but almighty 5d mark III.. Thanks for sharing this video. I love this mini cam. Cheers!

Good camera, who cares what everyone says or thinks especially if you enjoy it? And btw if a "professional" can't make this camera work for him he should find a new profession.

    great review, thank you.

Great review! My EOS RP is a perfectly fun camera for the price! I'm not pro photographer or filmmaker. Just a retiree getting back into photography and looking for a decent FF camera for my hikes, landscapes, and travels. The RP is $800 US less than most other FF cameras for a reason. Maybe non-pros like me don't need all the pro stuff. I got tired of pros knocking the RP, like major league ball players heckling the minors. While I respect and appreciate their reviews, I partially chose the RP out of spite, and I love it. It's a high quality camera, adequate resolution, and a killer lens lineup (RFs and EFs). If I really need more, the body was only a $1200 US hit and something I'm not afraid to get sand on at the beach. I've already spent more than that on Breakthrough filters, B-Grip, Manfrotto tripods, and other accessories – that I can of course use with whatever monster R comes out next (or a Z7).

hey i am stuck between eos r and rp can you please help me decide which one to buy

  11. Neil Roberts says

I think the whole RP and early reviewers (most of who didn’t actually have the camera !?Β‘) thing is quite interesting and now the simple down to earth common sense opinions are coming to the surface. And this review is one of those so a big thanks and in future we shall all be a bit more wary of those big name YouTubers who were simply too quick off the mark and proved their opinions can be biased and misleading.

People worry too much about the gear. Great video and well said!

  13. TVe200 says

For 1000 euro (Singapore) it is great, but in Norway it kost 1700 euro.

  14. Isataris says

Hi! Thanks for this review if the RP! Could you tell us where to buy it on the net or should we travel to Singapore!

  15. Electric Hillbilly says

Thank you for the straight to the point review. Very helpful.

  17. INFO STATION says

Thank you for the video. Is this video shot in 4k or HD?

  18. Rigs and Coffee says

What is the tripod mount that extends under the lens?

  19. Michael Gomez says

Oh and you're right, it's about the glass and the new RF glass is arguably the best. How then can you speak of a small and lightweight camera when the glass is larger than the camera AND blows up the cost savings??

  20. Michael Gomez says

You speak of 24fps in 4K, how's the AF working out for ya? You can day i5 does everything when it just cannot. Sorry…

  21. Tim.othy. Roy says

Would love a comparison video of the RP and M50. But, if I had to ask one question, what's better for low light Photography? The RP or the M50 with speed boots (using the same lens and hand held for both).

  22. John Steinbeck says

Great channel! Subbed. Cheers from Bali-

  23. Libor Krupica says

Hello Jody, nice video. Two points where the RP excel over the competition is the cost and the weight !!!! It would be nice to see some street photography with RP. The size and the weight calls for it …..

  24. Christopher Pack Art says

If they have a firmware update for the 1080p 24fps then I would consider this. I can get around the other handicaps of this camera.

  25. binaryblog says

For the same price or even cheaper in some countries you can get 6D ii which has exactly the same sensor but can film in 24p and has much, much better battery life and you don't have to use adapters. So I still don't understand why people would buy RP. Because it's mirrorless full frame? It's the worst mirrorrless full frame camera on the market, maybe except from some first generation Sony A7 cameras. If I was new to photography I would never buy a Canon camera. It's a greedy and cocky company that never listens to their customers and always cripple their cameras. They have nothing innovative in their cameras since Dual Pixel AF. Both Fuji and Sony offers much more, especially Sony.

  26. George says

    5DIII vs. RP?

  27. Tibor Danilics says

Youtubers and cheap videoshooters are retarded and trolls. It is clearly not meant for professional video, so why they expect it???

  28. Momchil Yordanov says

Wait 'till Christmas and buy that camera for $999.

  29. Andrew Mai says

Yes please! Do a comparison between the m50 with the speedbooster vs RP

  30. 4toconvert says

Finally, a sensible review not the rubbish by Kai when he didn’t even touch the camera and was reviewing via what he heard and looking at a spec sheet.

Please do a comparison with the M50.

Affordable is the most important advantage for EOS RP. And it can meet basic users need. Great review.

  34. Derek McCoy says

Fuji would have made a better choice for all those reasons.
