Travel photography with the Canon M50 on Magnetic Island

Hey guys. Something a bit different for you this time. I took my Canon M50 away for a long weekend at Magnetic Island off the coast of Townsville. There are already so many reviews of the Canon M50 as a video camera, so I thought I’d look at it purely from a photography point of view.

A couple of things worth mentioning…I shot jpegs only and you’re looking at them totally unedited. I think the image quality is fantastic. Most people have no need for anything better and those who complain are really just hung up on specs and not looking at it from a real world perspective.

I wanted to take as minimalist an approach as possible, so I only shot with the Canon EF-M 22mm f2 prime lens and I usually only took one photo of each scene and then moved on. The reason for this is because I normally shoot way too many photos and then I can’t be bothered sorting through them so they end up stuck on sd cards/hard drives and ultimately get lost or deleted.

If you’re old like me you’ll recall the days of film when we used to think carefully about how we took photos and would treasure having actual physical prints. I miss that magic frankly, so to sort of recreate that feeling I rarely ever checked the Canon M50’s LCD screen after I took a photo. In fact, I flipped it over so I couldn’t see it and just stuck with the electronic viewfinder (I did give in to temptation a few times, but not often!).

Staying with the old film ways, I shot in shutter priority with the ISO locked at 100. It’s very sunny here in North Queensland so no issues there. I’d usually stick at around 1/500th shutter speed and let the camera choose the aperture as I wasn’t too fussed about how much or little depth of field I got. Again, it was all about simplicity for me during this weekend away with the family.

I shot jpeg only, as I rarely have the time these days to sit around editing files like I used to in Lightroom, and I used the standard photo style and monochrome with the contrast bumped up to maximum.

Having seen the images now I can say I’m genuinely impressed with how the Canon M50 performed. For an ‘entry level’ camera it is capable of producing exceptional imags – particularly with a sharp lens like the 22mm. I do mention at the end of the video how the dual pixel autofocus didn’t behave quite how I expected from time to time, but I admit that there are probably ways of addressing this which I didn’t explore. I kind of like shooting manual focus from time to time anyway.

Thanks to those of you who read this far. I hope you like the video. Leave me a comment and I’ll see you in the next one 🙂

Hi Tom! Another technical question about M50 but not only 🙂

I remember that you used (with other camera) some kind of little wind protectors for internal microphone. Do you think that this kind of solution is good enough? Were you satisfied with it? I think that mic in M50 is great as long there is no wind. I know that VideoMicro is very affordable and of course I'm considering buying it, but it's another thing that you have carry with you.

    Take care!

Just received this camera yesterday, and the 22mm f/2 as well. It certainly delivers. I don't anticipate letting go of my a6300, but now that I have the M50, the G85 may have to go. I just can't think of a situation where I would want to grab the G85 first, unless I needed to do a very long recording, which is unusual. Anyway, the M50 packs a punch.
