Photographers I think we are more than that, we are content creators and service providers.
One technique not often mentioned is good old fashioned door to door, I got low on money and had no gigs lined up once so I packed up my gear and laptop and headed to one of the down town business districts, I know those small shops have no budgets and use cell phones for their photos But we can do better, I charge a low price for one or two photos which they can use on social media, for website content that I do a contract for and we go from there. One small shop is not going to make you a living but do several shops on one day I bring my laptop and process the photos right there in the shop.
As a freelancer I got more than one income stream you have to now days, I even work part time and temp work once in awhile.

On an unrelated note I just wanted to say I realized is I been watching-following your channel since I was checking out one of your gear videos and that got me hooked on food photography, I don't plan to do food photography myself but I do enjoy the process and I admit the food looks very good. I also realized I do have a strong interest in subject of food itself., I went to bartender school many years ago, I can still do it after a little practice, smart phones help with that being able to pull the recipes in a second or two (I think I still have my recipe cards somewhere) and I have food handlers permits for the four counties around me as well, I do prep work too.
So it's interesting to see how you work while also knowing what goes on from the kitchen prep side as well. I have done the Server-Waiter thing not something I enjoyed LOL
Lastly you kind of covered it but people skills and business skills are big part if not a bigger part of your business.
Sorry to go long, I'm a writer at heart.

  7. Allisha Green says

Yes yes !!! you are on it!! ☺ I am graduating on may 14th 2019 I really needed this video thanks again I really love your channel keep up the hard work

  8. Ben Harris says

Seconds in and I love the new lighting, just better balanced overall. Could use a little tweaking, drop the RHS a stop, and it would be perfect.

  9. Isabella Escobar says

Hi joanie! Loved the video! I have a question, how do you recommend to send the images to the clinent. Email, usb, drive…. since its such heavy content ive been having issues

  10. Elizabeth O says

This was very helpful Joanie Thak you very much, I think there is not enough information on a business aspect of photography, because even though we do this because we are in love with the world of photography, we also must make it sustainable so that we can continue doing it!

  11. Ken Holloway says

Thanks for another great video. Looking forward to next week. I prefer the older lighting much better. Didn't miss the candle either… Love your end-grain cutting block…

  12. Reese B says

These were great points to consider; loving this series! 👌Joanie, do you proactively have to turn away big brands or does your own brand make it clear who you prefer to work with?

Though I liked the previous lighting better, camera right needed a smidge more fill on your face, which the new lighting addresses. I miss the depth the previous lighting offered and the tighter crop avoided the modifier's reflection on the oven. I'd love to see your lighting setup! 🙏

  13. Robert says

To much white light which along with the cabinets behind you make you look white washed. I don't think that's what you are going for is it?
In the very last segment you spoke about what extra you could do for your client. Extra is good but you charge for "extra" don't you? You don't provide these "extra" services for free do you?

  14. Fatima Alamoudi says

I like the previous lighting setups more honestly, this is kind of flat .. great content as usual 💕👌🏼

  15. Heather says

    Love this

  16. Lluvia lm says

    Loveeee it!

  17. Aseel Brodd says

How long time did it take you to decide what photography field you will be doing? I have to take anything now to be able to make an income.

  18. San Kitchen says

Omg why do I Love this channel so much ??anyone the same ❤

  19. Firefox355 says

Hello Joanie is there a digital version of the book I can get online?

  20. Dimitris Tampakiotis says

I see most people like previous lighting but to me seems more clear and lighter the image with this set up. Right side is not at the shade anymore. Thank you for your videos.

  21. Ugnė Petrauskaite says

Previous lighting is much better, but please do make a video about your new light 😀

  22. Amanda Anima says

Really helpful! Do you have a video on how you longterm archive photos for clients? If not, please do tell. x

  23. Arpit Kapoor says

    Loved the previous lighting

  24. Isaac Coles says

I don't like it. :/ it doesn't look professional enough.

  25. Kobbyshots says

To be frank, your lighting looks practically the same. The change is with your background. Could you please try out other lighting techniques that will make the light not exactly dramatic but directional?

  26. Hahm Visuals says

I like this new lighting set up but with a little less fill? Enjoying your business videos!

  27. Diana Jeffra says

As usual, great content! These are all important things to think about. I’m looking forward to the next one about how to make your business profitable. I do have a quick question, what software do you use as a library for your clients to gain access to their photos?

  28. Roberta D says

P.S. I loooooove that talk by Simon

  29. Roberta D says

I'm struggling so much. I live in Italy and brands expect cheaper prices.
5 jobs from January 1 until now, and just one was from an Italian client 🤦🏻‍♀️ but I'm having difficulties also with international clients because I live far from them. It's a vicious cycle

  30. Stephen Krieger says

    Aww… I don't wanna wait a week.

And the lighting seems too bright. When I think bright white lighting, I think hospitals. Doesn't feel as homey.

  31. RobZimiga says

Simon is incredibly persuasive and clear..I'm in a business class and they played part of his Ted talk and dang its borderline cultish lol but I love his message..better than church 😆 thank you for this video..

  32. Haziq Azman says

Very helpful and straight forward. Loved it <3

  33. Taylor Reschka says

I think the new lighting has more coverage and balanced, but I loved the previous lighting myself

  34. Mike Miville says

Don't love the new lighting set up, it seems a bit bland. But then again, I tend to like contrast and thought the other lighting was just more interesting. Also, field of view seems wider and we are seeing more of the oven which is a little distracting and reflects your light. I kinda liked the tighter crop myself. Just my two cents. I love the lighting and crop from here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zVGG9qHBDA But, good video otherwise with some good knowledge and good questions to ask yourself. Thanks Joanie!

  35. Dwinidya Yuliastuti Widyanto says

I Love your previous lighting setup btw 😀 But Always big fans of your video xo

  36. Margaux Choisel says

Hi Joanie ! Thank you for this new vidéo ! One more time you rock !!! I like your journey in food photography and the way toi stars it with generosity and passion ! Regarding the lighting I prefere the previous one, it was warmer and created a welcoming athmothphere that suited you best ! Might be because I am used to it ? All the best !

  37. Creatiff777 says

I don't see much difference in lighting, both look good to me, although I'd like it to be just a bit warmer, a bit less pale 🙂

  38. Olly King says

Love your channel, I’m glad you’re talking about the business side more! Very helpful.

  39. Noealz Photo says

I think you look lovely ; ) please dont worry

  40. Fat Rabbit Video says

Not keen on the new lighting. Doesn't look natural. Too much contrast maybe . Highlights and shadows seem a bit OTT

  41. karthick Boopathy says

to be frank prevs lightng st up bettr than this
