I never understand why pay more for the Nikkor F1.4 85m over a Zeiss 85m F1.4 planar?? its superior in every way! it just doesn't have auto-focus

So I just bought the Rokinon 85mm 1.4 (used in excellent condition).
It's strictly manual focus, and it was much cheaper than buying the Nikkor. But….. Would it be worth it to buy the Nikon lens, to use for AF situations where manual isn't always ideal?

Favourite portrait lens is my Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Milvus optically, a little softer then the Otus and more Cromatica aberration but I prefer the bokah (no onioning) and it has lovely micro-contrast. Also it is weather sealed and has the option of clickless aperture, which makes it more practical for video.

Of course the Zeiss Milvus doesn't have AF, so my go to portrait lens for work is the 105mm f/1.4E ED, which whilst not quite as good optically (it is very close) or having the lovely build of the Milvus, does have AF, which makes it much more practical for every day use. It blows away the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G, which I am not a big fan of optically (though I do like its size and weight compared to most modern 85mm lenses).

A special mention has to go to the Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 Nokton which whilst not being perfect, has character. It feels wonderful in the hand, has great micro contrast and works equally well on full frame and on APS-C cameras (maybe even better for portraiture). Again it is a manual lens but it is possible to focus without using the focus assist on the D800 (something I can't accurately do with the 85mm) and it is wonderful on my Fuji when using focus peaking).

No review on the new Canon 85 mm f1.4 IS ? I just got it a month ago, but I don't see a lot of reviews on it. My experience with it is great though

Nice review, short, precise, Beautiful. Have you ever used sigma 85 f1.4? What's ur opinion about it when compared to the Nikon 85.or the Sony G master.
can you please do a comparison review on these lenses.?

  25. EDC Gadgets says

I currently use the 85 1.8G, but eventually I want to upgrade for the 1.4 for the much creamier bokeh. I can easily sacrifice the sharpness of the 1.8G for the much more pleasing rendering, skin colors, and smoother background of the 1.4G.
