Mobile speed cameras have long infuriated motorists, popping up sneakily and catching out drivers going a few miles too fast.
But one man was so fed up of living in fear of a whopping fine that he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Kristian Portugal, from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, rolled his sports car right up behind a police van and opened his boot to block the radar inside so it couldn’t scan the speed of passing cars.
He then left his car in that position and went for a pint in The Crabtree – his local across the road in Hemel Hempstead.
A worker at the pub said the mobile van is always outside.
The incident was spotted by one keen-eyed observer, who posted a picture on Imgur with the caption: ‘Someone just parked in front of a speed camera, lifted his boot so nobody could get caught speeding. Then went to the pub across the road.
According to traffic police, obstructing a speed camera may amount to obstructing the police and may also amount to perverting the course of justice, depending on circumstances.
The image has been viewed nearly two million times and has attracted countless comments from grateful drivers.
The motorist has been hailed as people’s champion – one Imgur user called him ‘the hero we don’t really deserve but it’s pretty great to have.’
Another said: ‘Someone buy that man a beer’.
Others, however, were less impressed with his actions, claiming that speed cameras play an important safety role.
One Imgur user with the name Sleepyhead wrote sarcastically: ‘Hurray now people can drive recklessly without repercussion! What a folk hero!’
A guy in a car a just a few weeks ago drove past the local regular speed van at a communtiy record high::: 86mph::: .to me it was deliberate because so many people see the van from their windows ect with high rise flats surrounding the road .

I just drive expecting to see a speed camera around every corner. Sad motoring, in comparison to 40-odd years ago! This is yet another example of technology making our lives worse, not better. There will be more examples as the years pass.

The poignant word to look out for is 'May' as people working in a speed Camera van are Police Staff, people who pay into the service without actually joining the Police, gaining all the benefits but not actually given a rank. Speeding tickets work under the Road Traffic Act offence … and acts and statutes are only given power by the consent of the people… although it is obstruction, none of what the road traffic cops said is enforceable by law…

Hope he can live with himself if he does that and a speeder hits a child crossing the road and gets away, Scot free. I'me no fan of speed cameras, but. I am no fan of speeders who are dangerous on our roads. Went to the pub to have a pint, how many people have killed others after drink driving. No shame or conscience.

When Road Safety Cameras were operated by the police motorists were too spineless to do any of this shit because they knew the boys in blue would crunch them. Now that the operation has been handed to private enterprise, these pathetic drivers have suddenly gained a degree of Remand Yard bravado because they know the operators are powerless.
