Why I only use THREE lenses as a wedding photographer

47 35

in 2015 I switched photography brands from Canon to Nikon. I owned 8 lenses with canon and it was too much. During the wedding day as a wedding photographer, I would be switching lenses every few seconds and not truly become a master of each lens. I owned a canon 70-200, canon 85mm, canon 35mm, canon 24-105 f4, canon fisheye lens, and more. As a wedding photographer you need to know your gear inside and out, once I switched to Nikon and only bought three lenses I mastered them really well and that’s when I started to develop a photography style.

I now shoot with just three lenses:
-Nikon 50mm Nikkor 1.4
-Nikon 135mm f2
-Nikon 24-70 (I only use this lens 5% of the time)

It’s been great only owning a few lenses, I know exactly the results I will gain from using each lens and I have become a better portraite photographer because of it.

In today’s video, we talk about why as a photographer you should own fewer lenses and spend more time learning them. How I switched from 8 lenses to only 3.

Hey Jeremy I don't usually comment but this video is honestly the best photography video I've come across since I began my photography journey about 2 years ago. I cannot believe you only have the amount of subs you do, imo you deserve millions for the brilliant content you make ❤️ I just subbed before even looking at your other content which I have never done 🙂 I shoot canon as well but also having recently seriously considered switching to Nikon because of the dynamic range and color saturation that comes with Nikon, I don't particularly like the brand but cannot deny their quality, anyways please keep up the amazing work
Much love all the way for, South Africa❤️🇿🇦

  3. Leanne Cloutman says

This was a great video! But was just wondering why you didn’t stick with canon and buy a 135 f2 and a 50 1.4 ? Canon glass is amazing

  4. Marco & Friends says

    Hi,
I thought about buying the 135mm 2.0 DC but I'm not sure because of the chromatic aberration wide open. Have you noticed that problem and how do you deal with it?
Thanks for your time and greetings from Germany.

Just be careful that Tamrpm 24-70mm has a bug the first copies from one or two years are known to drain the battery of the camera even if the camera was turned off. I heard about people sending them in for repair and it just slowed down the battery drain. I think later versions it was fixed?

  6. spanish. ink says

hi Jeremy, regarding the 135 DF its dificult to focus inside the church?

  7. Bobby Aghili says

    very nice work

  8. Just wondering why you didn't just pare down your Canon lenses? I don't see how switching to Nikon made a difference?

  9. Mamiya Phan says

It seems a lot of wedding photographers suffer from insecurity. They switch from one camera brand to the next and back again taking financial loss, giving up features they took for granted and for no real reason. Hey folks, it's not progress when you switch from Canon to Nikon or Nikon to Canon. Your departed company will soon come out with a wizbang camera model or gotta have it lens that will make you regret leaving them. Grow up and find ways to improve your work other than the "retail solution".

sometimes not about your style but what lenses work to get the photo !! like to see a behind the scenes wedding with your lenses !!

  11. Robert Young says

You could of mastered the same Nikon lenses you moved too, as canon have the same lenses lol. As for your choice of wedding lenses, they are great but have the feeling you have no idea about shooting weddings !

  12. Hananias Q says

Nice video, and great pointers. Keep it simple is best!
Last wedding I did. I shot with the 50mm f1.8 STM for about 80% of the time and the rest were shot with the 100mm f2.8 Macro (non L).

  13. Charles Mascari says

I've shot no less than ten weddings by myself with only two lenses, a 35/2.0 and a 50/1.4.They were mounted on two separate camera bodies and two flashes. The weddings came out beautiful with all the traditional shots and the formals.

  14. Vanessa P says

Jeremy, I like your style in shooting. Keep sharing your talents !

  15. Beta Max says

what a waste of money! you know you F#$ed up

  16. Tony Perez says

    🤦🤦🤦

  17. James Ryan says

I only use three, 24mm and 50mm primes and 70-200 2.8, sometimes in bright venues I use the 24-105 f4 also.

  18. Abisai Rivera says

How do you make the pictures look so nice. What filters do you use and what settings on camera. I like the one with the couple sitting down at 4:19 how did you edit that one?

  19. Symz G says

Man, your photos are ridiculously good. Very good angels.

  20. Amanda Steinborn says

35 mm is incredible. I would definitely consider it

  21. Jimmytwogunz says

Would i get away with using a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens? Would like to know if anyone here Uses this or have used it to shoot weddings! Thanks for any replys

  22. FotoGeek says

    2:13 man clean your lens!

  23. Alex Baldwin says

    Get the 24 1.8

  24. Emma Hutchinson says

Hi Jeremy. Is that a camera bag on the bench at 0:25. If so, what brand? TIA

  25. Jeff Scott says

What about wedding details? How do you shoot rings and such?

  26. Adam Johnson says

The 35mm sigma art is my favorite lens. 👌🏾

  27. Jose Lara says

This is awesome, I've never thought of it that way. I've thought of mastering lighting, posing, posing, composition, etc. But never really thought of mastering certain lenses.

  28. Tyron Jemison says

Funny I was just speaking with another photographer about how I only use a 35 and 135 for weddings. I get a ton of compliments from the guest because they see me working and actually moving my body to get the composition I’m looking for. They don’t know that it’s only because moving my feet is my only option…

  29. robbyjai says

you didnt need to swap systems to go to 3 lens. its nonsense.. you can do it with canons also.. im a wedding photographer of ten years… and i use a 35 F1.4, 50mm F1.2 and an 85 F1.2 to do all my wedding work. happily. to suggest you needed to go to nikon to solve your problems is silly

  30. Peter Skrypnyk says

What does camera brand have to do with lens choice? Sorry, I don’t get it.

  31. EpicSkiesPhotography says

so buy 8 bodies, problem solved

  32. L White says

Do you have a Flickr or a blog where I can see some of your pics with the 135. I’m looking at the Nikkor 105 1.4 or sigma art 135 1.8.

  33. Antonio Rivera says

Like many others who watched this video I have two questions. Why switch from Canon to Nikon when Canon has the same lens? Maybe there were others reasons but if there were you did not make that clear. Secondly, why not just use two cameras? You are wasting time switching lenses on one camera when you could have a second camera and lens ready to shoot immediately! You may not like to carry two cameras but is it much different than carrying around the lenses? I know it comes down to personal preference but you are creating extra work for yourself. I don't understand your reasoning.

  34. René Thomas says

    Great review!!!

  35. Hannu Sääskilahti says

You never need a macro for a detail shot?

  36. Musim Mas says

and then you search sigma 35mm f 1.4 for canon DSLR cameras 5 :13

  37. Benjamin Freddie says

Totally agree. I never bring more than 3 lenses with me, and I honestly think I only actually need 2 when it comes down to it.

  38. Bipin Dattani Photography says

Shooting wedding photography with 3 lens make you think more about your positioning and the shots you want to create.

  39. Merlin Alfonso says

Wise words! I've done a similar thing but with Canon. I use only four lenses for weddings, mostly just two. Only one of them is a zoom.

  40. Louis Luzuka says

Say hello to your new subscriber subbed much love from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦 the 35 sigma art is the next lens I wanna get next!!

  41. Steve Bodiford says

Do you shoot all lenses with the same fps…if so what speed and if not, what lenses for what fps (assuming you shoot video as well)?

  42. Kevin Sanders says

I use a pair of Canon 70Ds when shooting weddings, although I’m winding down now I’m getting old. I use two cameras on a quick release belt so I can use the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 DC OS HSM and the Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 DC APO OS HSM at virtually the same time. I use the new, STM version of the Canon ‘nifty-fifty’ f1.8 for portraits and the Canon 10-18mm f3.5-5.6 for anything that needs a really wide angle. The modern cameras are excellent with new, high ISO sensors and a lot of people forget that the depth of field of a lens is proportionally shallower than on full frame so can still get those dreamy-bokeh backgrounds.

  43. Thomas Lohr says

Fantastic images but why don't you just get a second camera? As a prime shooter this would really make sense, especially as those older pro bodies are so cheap second hand now.

  44. RAKOTONDRASOA HARY says

What is the best for video wedding

  45. Nam Thai says

Why could you not do the same 3 lens setup on canon?

  46. Malik Martin says

Great Lense Choice but most admirable was your pragmatic logic of why you only needed those three. I am tempted to forward this video to Ken with the Angry Photographer and Tony and Chelsea Northrop. To better maximize your NIKONS, endeavor to understand that NIKON Is untouchable in 2 Areas/n'iche i.e, NIKON'S Diverse and State of the art timeless Lenses and their Legendary CLS (Creative Lighting System) flash system. To use Nikon Lenses and Not use their Flash/Speedlights is the equivalent of an Ambidexterous amputating one's own arm. You need them both since they are mutually exclusive. I understand this video wasnt about flashes but the photos lack the brilliance and saturation that only NIKON Flash guns can afford. SB 26, SB 80DX should cost about $50…..and will last a lifetime and with NIKON CLS System they will fire optically. Nice video bro.

  47. khanzada Asif Kakar says

why did you switch from canon to nikon?
