Nifty Fifty is 1.8. The 1.4 is not so "nifty". 50mm is a great on crop sensor making "poor man's" 80mm length which makes it ideal for portrait.
This is not nifty 50! This a bit embarrassing! Such a mistake cannot go unpublished in photography

I like that your analysis is from a neutral perspective and based on the result of the real world images. The typical portrait photographer will say 85mm because of distortion reasons; which really bugs me because photography is also about story telling. In small studios, square spaces, and areas where you might have people moving the 50mm less confining. Getting the shot is always #1, sharpness on the subject is important as well, but as your style shows having the context in the background of the location is an element that's often overlooked.

Oh dear… you are dangerous…and wrong. Using a 50mm for a head and shoulders portrait distorts the subject which was obvious in your sample photo. Additionally thinking that a 1.2 is great because of the background blur is shortchanging the image. Any lens wide open uses the worst part of the glass. Also depth of field is so shallow you may have the eyes in focus (or one eye) but the nose and ears are blurry, that is not a good look for a portrait. You want the entire face sharp and if you want the background blurry just move your subject away from it. It may be fine for a full length or environmental portrait but for head and shoulders….it's just not right.

I can't help but bringing out my 85 1.2. I'm just addicted to that lens. But yeah… I love my 50mm and always have in my bag and will bring it out when I can't use my 85 or I want a different perspective. Thank you for the vid…
For sony a7iii, if I have choose only one portrait lens for prewed shoots.. what to choose between Sony 85mm 1.8 or sony 50mm 1.8 ??

Hi there, I recently got into photography. My 1st lens that I bought besides the kit lens that came with my canon sl2 is the 50 mm 1.8. Love this lens it's cheap and gets the job done. Love your channel.

thanks for your recommendation ,actually I have a 50mm 2.0 Carl Zeiss for m9. this is the first manual lens ,it is a bit challenge to composition with 50mm compare to 85mm or 135mm .do you have more sample photos for 50mm lens?
