The 6D2 has far better DR than a GH5 because it's sensor is 4 times larger

Maybe wait for the G9, rumors say it will be more photography orientated than GH5.

Sony A6500… metabones adapter… can use excellent canon glass and then get access to Sony's excellent IQ in their new bodies… have already pre-ordered an A7r iii as I will be moving away from the Canon ecosystem until they start innovating again.

Gh5 gets my vote. I shoot with a Nikon D5500 and an Olympus Em10 (also M43 like GH5). I can honestly say that with some good glass, especially the primes, you can get some amazing images out of the M43 sensor. I recently took my Olympus Em10 with a Panasonic 20mm 1.7 to a Halloween night show and this combination performed great and I've received awesome feedback on my images. And if I'm not wrong, the GH5 sensor is alittle better at low light and dynamic range than my 4 year old Em10. Plus the video qualities are outstanding!

Some tough choices and I assume a decent budget is available if we are considering the GH5. Given there is likely to be equal emphasis on both photo and video I think I'd look at the Sony A6500 as a good alternative. The APSC sensor will give better depth of field and lower light/high ISO capability over the GH5 in my opinion. He doesn't need to spend a fortune on lenses either. With an adapter pretty much any vintage ( cheap) lens can be used with the Sony so long as you have no issues with manual focus. If you do want video AF then Sonys line of APSC lenses and their 3rd party alternatives from Sigma will give you what you need at low prices. šŸ˜€

Nikon D500 would be my pick. Brilliant photo camera. Brilliant video camera. Amazing low light performance. Best option.

Cant go wrong with the GH5, its a true modern camera with access to fantastic lenses; you wont get anything as sharp & 3D on a DSLR than Olympus primes and teh convenience of touch screen operation is a game changer, once you use it you wont want to go back. I have Panasonic for fun and Leica for serious photography; I have adapted all my Nikon lenses to Leica M mount and sold all my DSLR bodies šŸ˜‰

any news on the upcoming Lumix G9?

  11. ds.techie says

Agreed. GH5 (20MP M43) is an outstanding video and more than adequate photo camera out there. Once taking a video with it, one can never go back to any other camera. Of course it cannot match the dynamic range, low light low noise performance and bokeh of an APS-C or FF camera, but it comes pretty close.

Stepping up to 4K from 1080P last year changed the way I shoot for the better. 4K is a lot more than just sharper video.

A6500? Until they fix the gh5 focus issue? Or possibly the new a7riii? Iā€™m in the same boat trying to pick the best camera?
