Panning is a simple technique to learn but takes plenty of practice to master. Moving subjects such as cars and bikes makes excellent panning photos and in this video Gavin Hoey gives you some simple hints and tips to get you started.

A few drops of rain can completely transform your photos but as Gavin discovered it doesn’t stop the cyclists of Amsterdam.

After the shoot follow Gavin into Photoshop where he has a couple of tips for dealing with distracting colours in the background of a photo.

    If you are ever going to practice panning shots on cars I highly recommend a shutter speed of 1/125 second
