GH5 6K Photo Mode; Extracting Frames on Desktop and In-Camera UPDATED

22 140

I answered a viewer’s question the other day on how to best extract frames on the desktop from the H.265 “6K Photo” video files created by the GH5, but have an updated, better answer for you today!

Also I show you how to do this on the camera itself, in case you’re wondering.

Hey Joseph, First off, THANK you for you help in this video as I was able to figure out how to capture a picture off video on the camera with this video! SO THANK YOU!

I hope you can help me. I have used a Lumix camera for years for video for my youtube channel. I noticed the older my camera got, I could hear a grinding noise in the background of my videos. I thought perhaps it was just because the sound card was getting old. I purchased a new Lumix dc-FZ80 and the video blurs in and out on every video and I am still having a grinding noise on my videos. I have a youtube channel, and nearly every video I have taken in the last four months using that camera has blur into focus, then out of focus. Do you know if it is specifically a problem with the lower end Lumix? I never had a problem with the video blurring like that on my old Lumix so I wonder if it is a setting I am not using right on the newer camera? I also wonder if you have ever had someone comment on the grinding noise in the background. I could link you to some video on my channel for examples if you think you may be able to help. I would appreciate any help you can give as being a single mom, I don't have expendable money to purchase another new camera and I have really loved my Lumix. Recently I have just been using my cell phone and computer for videos due to the blurring issues. This is sad as the camera is only six months old but I am so frustrated I want to send it back but don't think that is an option now. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Have a Blessed Day!

What has better quality? Export on the camera or on the desktop?

You can also import your burst video file into FCPX and edit it from there. Once you are done, you hit share and save current frame. It works very well.

Hi Joseph and others. I am trying to copy my footage back from my computer onto the SD-card to be able to extract in the GH5. However the camera keeps saying 'no valid picture play' after copying. Do you have any advice?

For windows 10 i use the standard photoapp that comes with windows 10. It can view the 6k/4k files and very easily extract individual frames. Works fast and better than photofunstudio. (which is no fun at all to use 😉 )

Thanks for the explanation and links.

The GH5 with the 2.3 firmware no longer has the same interface as what you show. In fact I cannot view any frames at all since although there is a different interface with different icons, I end up with a menu that asks if I want to upload to WiFi. Possibly I need to turn some WiFi function off. In any case the manual is of zero help.

If you use Final Cut Pro X, you can just import the 6K file into it and create a project with the custom 4992 x 3744 resolution. Skipping through the frames, you can go to "File > Share > …" and select Save current frame as TIFF or Photoshop File. Or you can "Export Image Sequence". I must say that I made some comparisons using the Kaleidoscope app and found that the jpg's that I extracted in the camera itself looked a little better than the tiff's I got from using external video players or editors.

I think when you take the 6k photo in the gh5. You go into your playback and select the photo you want by scrolling through the roll and save it within the GH5 itself. It will automatically save the picture as 6k resolution jpeg onto the SD Card That should save you this entire process of having to use hand brake. Found this tutorial here. https://youtu.be/xLi5caUIuBU?t=8m5s

Wow! Very Helpful, Joseph, Thank you!

I use preCut pro to export frames at 4K. Latest version supports 5K and 8K etc. Find on Apple App Store for $14.99. Very useful! Search preCut pro

  12. Jonathan Ninnin says

Can you extract a 6K raw sequence from this ? Or it is always processing images?

  13. Margueritte Peterson says

Hi Joseph, I was easily able to run the program and drag the videos from a hard drive into the app, and put in the presets, but then when I click Process to change my MPEG-4 movies it gives me a red error message. However, when dragging the videos from my Desktop it processes them fine. Unfortunately I normally have so much footage that I rarely would drag anything from my desktop. Any way around this that you know of?

  14. My Gmail says

why is it called 6k when its not even close to 6k resolution.

Good gracious, that's incredible technology; Im considering buying the GH5 for this and other reasons, but wonder if any other quantum leaps of technology are just around the corner?

    HI,
why not use "Free video to JPG converter". it is dead-easy, works in Window and open source as well!!!!!!!

  18. NickpedFilm says

Why is the exposure unresponsive until the 6K photomode is recording? This makes it hard to set the exposure before S/S the photomode.

Hi Joseph. Can you please let us know all the autofocus setting you have used for the snow board 6k photo capture. I am trying 6k with birds, and as it flys, the focus goes away and I am getting blurred image with focus in background. Can you please suggest the best autofocus setting for that. Many thanks

  20. José Font Bullrich says

MPEG Streamclip is another open source app that will transcode anything to anything. Have seen it in a lot of postproduction houses and was using it to transcode 10bit footage from the GH5 until yesterday! Stopped working along with the updated Premiere with those clips.

For all MS users you can use Klites Media Player Classic codec pack. No conversion needed just press Alt+i and you can save the image you like. Works great for me

Could you show the best way to setup the GH5 to take photos like the snowboarder series please.
