Studio Portrait Flash Photography Full Photo Shoot

When first starting out in photography most peoples goals are to capture solid photos with natural light. That means understanding the exposure triangle, learning composition and just getting a feel for capturing the moment.
As you progress as a photographer you start to look at ways to not rely on just the natural light. You want to shape the light, control the light, move the light and pretty much bring your own. That is why so many photographers quickly gravitate to flash photography. But, when you pick up your first flash or studio strobes you might be a little lost at where to start.
I can tell you I was completely lost when I picked dup my first flash. All I knew was to put it on my camera set to TTL which is auto and take pictures. I didn’t understand the importance of controlling the light, the importance of shooting in manual. So all my flash images looked flat and boring.
About two years ago Adam Lerner and I created an almost one hour long Studio Portrait Flash Photography Photo Shoot at my old loft. The goal was to build a portrait session out starting with just one flash and going from there. We brought out softboxes, light stands, reflectors, triggers, modifiers and more.
We wanted to simply have a fun photo session where we weren’t stopping and turing to the camera every few seconds to teach. I like making videos where we do that but in this case it was more about shooting and seeing how the process was captured.
The questions I am asking during the video are the question that I think many of you out there would have had. It’s great not to have a script and just free flow from photo to photo.
We did this shoot tethered to the computer so we could see the results as soon as the photos transferred to the computer. You will see the images pop up on the screen for a short period of time so my recommendation is to give the video a pause if you want to look at them for longer.
I hope you enjoy and that you’re able to gather some tips on flash photography from this video.

Amazing information! Even 5 years later this was so helpful and full of so much good information. Nothing like having a video boost confidence from the tips given and employed.
what's in that rectangular box?
I love this style video, the only thing I wish you would change is having the photos linger longer on the screen, especially when youre checking the screen. We dont need to see you looking at the photo and id rather spend more time on the photo itself than seeing y'all look at a computer screen that we cant see
The video is great, the only problem, like someone else also mentioned is the image preview. we see it for 2sec and then while you guys talk about it for bit we are looking at your back and not the image itself, so we can't see the things you talk about 🙁
Afro dude is a douche…thinks he knows it all.
Love that you guys shot this so wide lol
HI Jared, love the dew, I'm a curly hair too have you tried Deva curl..lol funny recommending product to a dude but just in case you don't know about it…might change you life;)
PS love the vids, thanks so much buying the flash guide!!! Need it:) Im not a great DIYer
best video about portrait flash photography I see
Hello Jared! ,… I have to say… I like this video is discosting about lights effect in deference angles and ideas of what you can do with light for portraits shooting photography it takes a lot of technicals ideas involve for a photographer there is a lot going on in this video to learn a lot from beside lighting there are types of equipment deference tools to work with an order to take a photo like ( Jared ) said earlier before " start basic with one light and built up from there," weither if this video was 8yrs old or 100yrs it still wart it and you also learn from other peoples too like Jared other friend said you never know everythings and you still learn lot more from other photographers too . now here is my comment this video was very compelling it drives me more in to do more into photography Big Thank You!, Jared, for posting this video… keep it up!. Thumbs Up.
PLEASE Jared it is horizontal not horizontical
I may be 3 years late but this is he most informative video on flash photography I have ever seen. Thanks Jared and Adam for clarifying the confusing world of flash.
Don’t ever take this video down. This is the third time I’m watching this. And I pick up something new everytime.
Best one so far good show good watching you play with the light let’s face it photography is all about light the two of you maybe you could bring him on again you both do extremely well together
Enjoyable and informative. Great video. Funny thing: I had the impression of Jared being tall; he has a tall look somehow until you have someone else there for scale to show he's on the average side.
Why purple skin?
Great video, thanks for sharing !
Jewish guys are cute
Great Video J!!!
Greatest demo video i've ever seen. Makes it so easy to understand and learn how to problem solve and troubleshoot on site!
Good video. I'd only suggest that since you're shooting so tight, move that soft box even closer. Softer light and less power.
Excellent info! Just what I was looking for. Need to try these with my shoot tomorrow.
Great guide! learned a lot from Fro & Adam. highly recommended!
Jared's shots look better. Nothing personal
TY!!

Very helpful. Can't afford an AC3 or Pocket Wizards but will adjust lights manually, no problem. Thanks
haha… jared directing that guy what he should do. Seemed like he was getting a bit annoyed. Jared was just having fun with the nice setup though. Good info!
tank's for the advices
nice video but it's a shame that we don't see the shot while you are commenting it or compare to the other ones.
Great Video. Cool Guys! 🙂 Helped me a lot, and got me an idea about light, and studio light. Now it's time for me to get it started. Thanks Jared!
i loved it
i am from pakistan and i am a huge fan of u sir 🙂
Why do ppl take VR off with flash photography?
should be separated into 4 or more epispde
So, are you guys shooting TTL in this shoot, or setting the flashes totally manually? I guess, since you mention the aperture shutter speed, and ISO at times, that you are shooting manually. Is that correct?
The softbox has no light?
I like this video. It is very useful.
Jared!!!!!!!! I looooove this-wish I had found it sooner-eh who cares its GREAT!!!
hey man i think u are so cool helping people out the way u do also im new at this but i have some great shots of lots of diffent stuff and i was wondering if i could get you to have a look at some of my pictures if so how works best for you?
31:43… Oooh, nice!
Jared! This is really great stuff!!! What is the Softbox you are using?
And is it better to use TTL?
23:55 …my artist name is "The Beep". Makes it really funny for me. Cause The Beep is here for both of us.
👍
Are y'all purposely switching from shooting in color and then b&w? Why? Isn't it better to do b&w post processing? Perhaps this was just to see lighting effect? I too have enjoyed this video and would like to be on your emailing list. I've subscribed to this, thanks Jarred. I miss my fro.
i wanna say thanks to u cuz u helped me so much , God bless u man
thanks jared!
dear fro.
i'm doing some product photography today and i can't seem to capture the colors of the LED lights in this product. boss man is looking for the light to disperse into starry looking bulbs, while also maintaining the colors of the lights. my problem is that I've been leaving the exposure open to capture the glow of the lights, but because they keep changing, the color turns white soon enough. is this a photoshop fix, or is there a was to capture time and color at once.
sincerely, the dude who you met at frankfurt hall that one time
I think it is great fun watching you working and I am learning a lot at the same time, thank you.
That guy looks like Christoph Waltz
