Have you guys been missing my shooting tutorials?! I’ve been missing putting them out. You know what they say, a camera is just a tool and if you don’t know how to use it you won’t get the results you’re looking for. In this video, I’m going to show you the camera and exposure settings I use for all of my boudoir photo shoots and a few settings that you can use if the situation calls for it.

In this shoot I’m using my Sony a9 and my Zeiss 50mm f/1.4.

Thanks for watching everyone! Two quick answers.
    1. The screen I'm using on top of my camera to record my EVF is the Atomos Ninja V: https://amzn.to/2ByxcHM
    2. Shutter speed vs ISO. My camera does great with high ISO, so I would rather apply a little noise reduction to an already pretty clean image than risk blur in the photo from my hand shaking or the model moving. Obviously, the answer here is "it depends" and you just have to pick and choose your battles. Of all of the photos we took, this model decided to post the 8000 ISO photo on her Instagram. I believe that we as photographers care more about noise/grain than our clients do.

Love this channel! Very helpful! F5.6? Hmm… If I was shooting on 35mm lens, doing a full body shot, had an interesting or very open environment, and really wanted to make use of negative space to carve the body out in the composition I might use f5.6. (Not sure if I've tried it, but it was the first thing that popped in my head when it came up in the video.) If I'm getting a detail, maybe just a leg in front of a solid background, for instance, I'm shooting on a 24-70, and I really want everything ultra sharp because the model has incredible skin and muscle tone, I might want to stop down to where my lens really shines. If I'm shooting on a 200mm lens and I'm getting a quarter length shot of the model, I might want to be around f4. 5.6 might be a bit much there though… I dunno. I've been shooting as a hobby for about five years but I haven't done boudoir yet. (Have some sessions booked coming up soon.) These are just some ideas that popped into my head. Maybe someone else can chime in and say how they think my ideas would work out in practice…

Well, its all about the look you want in an image. Was a little disappointed about the title because this is so basic on aperture. I don't agree about using high ISO vs slowing down the shutter speed. Not only do you introduce more noise but can also affect the overall image. A slower shutter speed of 1/100th even as low as 1/60th with a model that should stay still should be no problem at these speeds. If you are so worried about movement go slower and use a tripod. Are you trying to kill all the Ambient light with such fast shutter speeds? I think I would use the available light ( Ambient Light ) with flash so my flash doesn't work so hard. With all that window light in the bedroom at 1/200th, it killed it.
This is just my opinion and how I think I would have done this shoot!

  5. Kamil Wolski says

Whaaaat?? Really? It's simple – make RAWs and focus on idea/frame. Aperture, shutter speed or iso depends on what you want to achieve… Sorry, this is so much crappy content…

  9. Billy Crisp says

Failed to mention that you stepped back quite a bit when showcasing shooting at F2.8 instead of F1.4 meaning their would be more DOF. Kinda misleading.

  10. Corvus Alpha says

The best configuration for this type of photos, depends on establishing the optimal point of the lens you use and the type of camera, there is no absolute rule, but if there is a better choice of parameters and lenses to use, this makes the difference, …

i like the video a lot… but using such slutty thumbnail pics as a click bait is not appreciated man… your content is good enough on its own… don't use these cheap tricks to increase your audience view…

  13. Martin Metodiev says

Each chimpanzee would be able to press the camera button and take pictures. No good thing I heard and did not see. Click, click, click … a lot of mediocrity with these mirrorless and uniform-looking models…boring

I dont think anyone came here for boudoir photography tips… At least I use the 50mm on my Boudoir Session and multiple bounce flash combined with day (windows) light.

  20. Philippecr says

The auto-focus is good. you know.

  21. Justin Campbell says

Cool video Michael. I'm shooting on a 70d. So I'd have to take the photo from the other side of my house using the 50mm. What focal length would you recommend for APS-C? I've got the Canon 24mm 2.8 and the Sigma 18-35mm in my bag.

  22. Nick EK says

Do you ave to use a subject like that? you are sick? I didn't learn anything, I was looking at her the whole video

  25. Mike S. says

4:55 What is up with the anti stopping down mentality? I usually find the first thing that amateurs do when they get a hold of high end glass is to start shooting wide open excessively. In the comments below you stated that out of all the images she posted the one shot at f5.6.

Btw, excellent video tutorial. I have many prostitute working friends and they often ask me to take photos for their online ads. But, I am not a professional, so I often refuse. You should come up to Canada and work – you would be so busy it would boggle your mind. In Canada, prostitution is legal but private healthcare isnt. That's Canadian values, I suppose.

Next time you hear women talk about being equal and capable of fighting in the military, performing as well as men in fire-fighting capacities or anything of the sort, remember our Model Annie. I love womens' beauty, but everytime I see women act like women, it makes me think of how much they lie when they want things they can't have or can't do.

  31. MZJ says

  33. Zdenek Malich says

Michael saying that ISO doesn't worry you that much.. It may should because the higher you go, the more you loosing dynamic range. Sure when you holding the camera like this you have to use faster shunter speed.
