Galaxy S II Vs iPhone 4 – Snapshot shootout – Mobile Photography

Samsung Galaxy S II Versus the iPhone 4 in a snapshot photography shootout challenge head to head.

The iPhone 4 is, perhaps arguably, the current kind of mobile phone photography, even earning it’s own moronic little word mashup, iPhoneography, Last time I put it against a new ANDROID contender for the crown, the Sony Ericsson Xperia ARC ( ) But now there’s another Android smartphone holding up a serious challenge for the throne of best camera in a mobile phone.

This review and comparison focusses only on the SGSII’s main, Rear camera, an 8Mp sensor with auto focus lens, capable of 1080p HD video recording and features an LED flash, the SGS II does have a front facing camera but it’s only 2MP, is really only for video chat… and is pretty crap anyway.

HDR sucks only if you use it wrong. There's many situations when HDR is unnoticeable but is essential for the picture.

    a) The iPhone's shots do look better, but only because they're more saturated and have more contrast. Editing those pictures would be hell.
    b) HDR sucks.
    c) Even Android has HDR apps, so no, it would probably not crush it.
    d) Clouds aren't red, Galaxy wins.

Just to let you know @blunty3000 the video works way better than before, still no manual focus yet though.

iphone 4 is better in camera mode!!!

Apparently, the camera app is quite weak in CM7 on the Galaxy S II. I wonder if you could achieve better quality with CM rather than the stock firmware?

Great video. I own a US variant of the GS2, and I was sorely disappointed when it came to it's 1080p video mode. I usually keep it in 720p (offers stabilization, and is not zoomed), but I really wish I could do something about the sound. It's bothersome, and very annoying. But good lord, the photos this thing takes are incredible,, especially when you get into the settings and mess around a bit. Look forward to the next comparo vid.

    I'm relying on you !!! :D:D

i like the comparison but it was kinda silly when you said the iPhones photos look better because of the high contrast but u can easily fix it in post but when it got to exposure the galaxy s was better when the iPhone out performs it a lot with HDR with isn't even postproduction really???

Brilliant comparison. I particularly valued your assessment of the TIME-LAG when snapping photo's and also the VIDEO performance in normal light. I think a low-light VIDEO comparison (twilight – near dark) would have shown even more favour towards the amazing iPhone 4. Cheers.

@timemake Because the iPhone makes an excellent point of comparison that almost everyone will be familiar with. It's a common denominator. duh.
