Create a Photo Studio ANYWHERE!

24 59

You guys know how much I love to crush ambient light! In this video, I set up an outdoor photo studio with a 2-light setup for portraits. The idea is to crush the ambient light so that it doesn’t affect our exposure and build our exposure from scratch – with flash!

For this video, I’m using the Cactus RF-60 flashes, a Cactus V6 wireless trigger, Cactus CB-60W Softbox and Cactus F-603 60″ umbrella. I take you thru the process of getting my exposure using just the softbox. The idea is that I want tightly focused light on my subject’s face, so I even grid the softbox to minimize spill.

Once I’ve gotten my exposure on the subject’s face, I then add some fill light to my subject’s form. I build this from scratch and then blend the fill to my key light.

Flash isn’t as hard as you may think. It’s about trial and error based on predictable results. I build my exposures and talk about what I’m doing along the way and pop up each image I take on the screen so you guys can see exactly what I’m doing.

In that location you’d expect to have a nice background and the light would be just fill. Or get rid of ambient light all together. That’s why I’m disliking it. The results here are mediocre

I want to buy mi first speedlights, so I'm watching all sorts of videos regarding this, I've seen wonderful results when they are used outside . your pictures are good but they do not pop as others I've seen…. why is that? is it the brand of flash? or the camera? the exposure maybe?

No puppies were harmed in the course of making this video.

I know you are trying to illustrate the use of strobes… but where you are in there is what I pray for every time I'm shooting a wedding and you are completely misusing the available light and background of this location. You could have taken these photos in your garage and they would have looked the same. What you do in such locations is identify the light source (yes there is always a light source even under shade) and you work with low powered fillers and kickers to get AMAZING portraits. You could have also skipped using any strobes at all and gotten better results. Another thing is that HUGE umbrella isn't serving you as you intended with that flash. Flashes throw focused light even at their widest setting and I can assure you could have used an umbrella half that size and gotten the same results. Even if you manage to bring the flash far enough to hit the outer parts of the umbrella you are still dealing with very uneven light.

When you are working with a real, paying client you look like an amateur if you take this many "test shots"
A Sekonic L-358 at the very least would teach a real deal. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the effort

Good video, but you are missing one simple, but VERY IMPORTANT component of any shoot like this. I am talking about a freaking LIGHT METER dude! C'mon! You know better than me.

  23. Kyle Comeaux says

I've read to never mix artificial light with daylight… Why would that be the case?

  24. Adam Turion says

Love your videos…but this…!?!?!?! You could use only the huge umbrella and have the same result..maybe better
