Grip rule… when you grab your C-stand, always grab both the main shaft and the arm at the same time. If you're putting it away and someone else grabs it the stand and the arm, and you are just holding the stand, you will get your hand crushed.

Hi. Great videos. Been looking at them for about a month, I've learned a lot. I just saw the banner image for this video. GenCon? You play RPGs? Whaddya know!

  3. Fabian Vallejos says

  4. Jo Phot says

Thank you for this video! Love your style!

  5. martinS S says

Nice recommendations. I am always surprised how many photographers don't use any grip equipment. Gaffer's tape?

  6. Marcelo Góes says

2 things that are nearly impossible to get in Brazil: Foam boards and c-stands. a c-stand here cost (if you find one) nearly a kidney.

  7. BigMilan says

    I see… Subscribed.

  8. Dawn Mist says

I use small pebbles instead of sand in the bags, sand wrecks the zippers and is a lot messier to deal with.

  9. Deacon Blues says

Big like from me for mentioning the use of flags. They can be just as important as using reflectors, which most people only buy, and in some cases more important depending what you what to accomplish. Flags are great just like using snoots & barn doors on lights for better control

  10. Wilson Newman says

Great video! You will never be able to make too many videos with quick tips like this. No one will ever get tired of them.

    Best photography channel on youtube

  12. Asgardcore says

    Excellent. Thank you so much

  13. John Fishlock says

Solid Video. Keep them coming. Really good stuff. Thanks for all the links!

  14. Robbie Keene says

Another great video Daniel! I think a little history of Daniel Norton would be an interesting video. If you could talk about how you started, the first things you got to start a studio and what you did before that, how that changed and developed as time went on, what gets used all the time vs. what you bought but rarely use and so on. Thanks!

  15. Will Gavillan says

Great video, Daniel. Thanks for the info

  16. Dagon Khan says

Enjoying your videos Daniel and I have a request which is kind of related to one of the items you have mentioned in this video. Would you please consider a video about flags? Use of black boards etc. I'm unsure of how to employ them and what effects they have.

  17. Danny Solis says

Perfect timing. I'm trying to build up a little studio. I would like to know what tripod you like.

  18. Selfpowered says

One thing people never talk about (it seems) is how to start a photography business. Laws change from place to place, but would you recommend doing a small business course, doing a business plan with an accountant, talking to a lawyer who is familiar with photography e.t.c. ?

  19. Jeff Veltman says

Daniel, if I had to pick one channel to subscribe to, it would be yours. Taking pictures as a hobby is cool and all, but every time I watch one of your videos, I want to quit my day job and dive into it! You are an inspiration and loving MY dream brother!

  20. naltav says

Thanx for this videos. And all your other videos. Recently started subscribing to your channel. Keep up the good work! 👍 I'm doing mostly real estate photography, but I'm trying to get into product photography. Future videos on THAT topic will be welcomed with open arms! 😂

  21. Rashad Hourie says

Hey, can you talk more about C Stand, their types and accessories?

  22. PiDsMedia says

No lead in shotbags for a long time, for OHS standards, they use steel pellets punched from off-cuts of steel sheet used in manufacturing.
Reminder – the shot bag goes OPPOSITE the mass you need to balance on the C-stand, ask Archimedes about 'levers'.
The c-stand 'knuckle' is called a 'Grip Head' in other places.
A decent tool-box can also be used as an Apple Box, so long as it's strong enough.
20feet is like, 6 meters for the rest of the world. 20 meter cables are more Gaffer kit then studio photographer kit 🙂
Ladders are also great platforms to use for a Slider in a pinch.

  23. justyjust says

Do you have a recommended square meter of area that would be most suitable for a studio? Also recommend ceiling height as I may consider building one at the end my garden. Thanks Justin

  24. Bill Thornhill says

More good info, love these videos man.

  25. Mark Philip says

Good stuff… Keep em coming…. Can you go a bit into backgrounds? Paper, vinyl, canvas, lengths, widths..

  26. JC Crafford says

    I enjoy your channel. Thanks.

  27. Daniel Imamura says

Thanks for the nice video! I really enjoy the content you create and how you make your thought process and workflow easy to understand. Would love to see more videos like this and it would be great if you could talk about potential alternatives for starting lighting kits that are more affordable to people who are still learning lighting techniques and cannot afford pro-grade equipment. Living outside of the US makes everything more expensive and I am planning to buy a kit that is good enough to start up and then replace them with better quality ones when I start making money. Keep up with the good work!

  28. Mark Shirley says

Thanks Daniel – I was going to buy a Aputure Light-dome – do you have a recommendation.
