Critique the Community Episode 24 – Fine Art Photography
We brought in Mike Kelley to help give his input on this episode of Critique the Community where we critique 20 fine art images submitted by Fstoppers members. Mike is a world renowned architectural photographer and regularly sells fine art prints. Lee, the other host in this video, has never sold an artistic print in his life. Let us know who you agree with or if you think they’re both wrong.

He took a hard left to “shit on your face”… lmao! #punIntended
Jerry Uesleman just rolled over in his grave with the clock photo!
Oh man where do I get a refund? Stonehenge astro photography! UGGGGGGGH!
Guys starting to doubt your EYES! Who is picking this photo for a FINE ART CATEGORY? Please please give us 5 stars to compare to. Brett Weston wanna be! UGH!
I like this serie but I don't understand how could you possibly rate pics (especially Fine Art pics) without Titles.
Omg, “I could be the first guy to take a dump on your face” God I love that comment!
8:07 WEEBS!, and 16:11 they were so damn lazy they couldnt even FOCUS STACK IT lol…………oh ya, they didnt even center the freakin apporange…. 45:06 again, these people are so lazy, they couldn't straighten the freaking tree, its slanted and thats killing my OCD.
This episode would have been more interesting, IMO, if it was less about trying to define what fits into "fine art" and more what's simply a well-taken, interesting photograph (maybe 2 different ratings). Maybe some scored a 2 as "fine art", but plenty of those were fantastically composed and interesting shots, and the intent was quite clearly achieved. Also, if you want to say something is or isn't "fine art" by a "commercial" measuring stick, sure, but plenty of these fulfilled the criteria for "art".
I did love the shot at ~22:00 though, I think they were dead on there. After this I understood what they were after.
Robert Morris is great, highly influential artist, well worth exploring beyond a single mystifying image.
I had high expectations for this episode but was sadly disappointed with the selection of images.
its prob just film on a wet wheel lol
I unsubscribed afterthis.
Is the guy on the left the one who posted the tutorial about how to copy and paste a car over a background? And the one on the right the one that talks about his planes shot every other video?
And you laugh at other people and you really have that conversation at 43:00?
The commercial viability of art doesn't make it art. Making art has nothing to do with making money, it has to do with making art, and a fine artist doesn't make art to make money. Fine artists make art for its own sake and would be doing so whether they were paid to do so or not. I've made art all my life and have a degree in art, yet no one has ever paid me a cent for my work. That doesn't mean it isn't art. https://www.viewbug.com/member/GaryRea
I think it would help with submissions, and with your cynicism, if you would make very clear guidelines for what you consider a "fine art" or an "insert here" photo. Most professional contests have that.
No picture can't stand on by itself for man is the measure of all things. Informative though.
Thats a dyson not a plane
Its a wedding dress
This is ridiculous, they should've thrown in at least a few photographs by real working contemporary art photographers, not just the Fstoppers members. Some REAL fine art photographers currently producing amazing work: Deana Lawson, Roger Ballen, Alex Prager, Mickalene Thomas, Petra Collins, Awol Erizku, Juno Calypso, Maisie Cousins, Genevieve Gaignard, I could go on and on…
The black and white rail is not fine art? That is super stupid. I think the definition is would you buy and hang it on your wall. That is "fine ART" . Art is subjective. I would see this in an art gallery.
