I love all the hacks except the Direct Light hack. After decades of photos I've grown to hate it and consider it a copout which greatly detracts from the subject. In this case he had a stunning girl and she got lost in the effect. This is of course more of a personal preference than anything. Many people get all googly eyed over the direct light, each to his own. Chevy vs Ford sort of thing. To my eyes the model was a Ferrari and direct light turned her into a Pinto. The most important thing is how the artist/client/photographer feel about it as well as the intended audience. If your getting paid for sparkly flecks of light, give them lots of sparkly flecks of light.
