Off-camera speedlight senior portraits using the Westcott LunaGrip

22 45

Alycia White shows her simple, but beautiful techniques for creating dramatic senior portraits using a single speedlight and a Westcott LunaGrip lighting modifier. Balancing the light on your subject with a bright background requires flash, but direct flash is very “snapshot” looking. She creates soft and flattering light to complement her backgrounds.

I don't see what this grip can do which other modifiers can"'t do

It's muted. Lots of photographers do it. A lot of customers like it. Typically, though, if you are going to go to the trouble of muting on PHotoshop you also create layers and leave some of the color in the subject – makes the photo more dramatic and makes the eye focus on the model. But to each their own. I like the photos, little washed out, but overall good result, and one that most customers are going to be satisfied with.

i would use an umbrella{shoot thru as first choice with the flash diffuser down on the flash .

The faded processing is not good with senior looks.

So many negative comments, whats wrong with commenting in a positive tone that can still get your point across and yet still be constructive… enjoy the video for what it is and be positive…. be happy…. duh!!!!

Just recently purchased my LunaGrip and I'm in love with it! What is a good way to make my eye catch lights pop just a little more?

I think the LunaGrip looks good, I would like a comparison of that to an umbrella though. An umbrella is faster to setup. The result of the lunagrip is good and I would have stopped the video there, instead of showing the processed result because many people process differently and would like or dislike your processed picture which is what the video is not supposed to be about. This video is to show the result of the lunagrip – not your processing after the fact. I personally can't stand when people process in that fashion – I think they destroy the photo that way. It just looks way over processed and contrast or something is just gone or a photo that is just faded away – like finding an old photo in the garbage dump after many years laying under the exposed sun – just not my style of picture processing. The picture from the Lunagrip you showed was perfect as an output to many clients. Again this video is to let people know what the Lunagrip is and its features…not your processing style.

What makes this diffuser superior to a shoot through umbrella? Thanks in advance
