36 132

In this short video, you see just how easy it is to get great results using a simple, effective and economical 2 soft box lighting set-up (for photographers with strobes and studio lights).

I shoot using an Olympus OMD and Canon 5D (with its standard 50mm lens) and compare results at the end.
Enjoy!

the gradient on the background its competing with the models shirt, but unfortunately you didn't give settings on the flag even though I can figure it out a beginner wouldnt

  2. DudeGuy says

So when he said 2 lights and a cheap set up, he meant 2 grand worth of shit and two lights and a speedlite?

  3. JRB Photography says

Not a helpful video for cheaper options 😂 don't think people mean the camera when they say expensive equipment. It's more all the other stuff that soon mounts up in price

Let's use a budget setup today: Broncolor.
    Sigh…

What are your settings on camera and on strobes? I know how to set up, I need info on settings and finding it very difficult to find.

  8. Deon Hamilton says

Nice but you never talked about the lighting lol nice butterfly setup but most users don't even know about that this to me was not a tutorial, it was a guy showing off that he can get a good shot with two lights and two types of cameras.

I can't believe all the comments regarding how pricey it is to get this type of studio set up. These same people probably cell phone photographers. He says right in the video you can use speedlites instead of studio strobes, but people still whining. Photography is about creativity, so if you can't get creative and figure out a less expensive way of shooting then too bad.

Ayy mate, perhaps you should use cheap speedlites ? the ones that costs $80 and cheap soft boxes? the ones that costs $20? We define cheap different

    Cross-over camera?

  14. Adrian Gray says

Sorry, a stupid question, when you meter the light you use the idle lighting of the softbox, but when you shot you get a much higher lighting from the flash, so how is this calculated? does the light meter includes the flash final values?

Bloody hell, Karl…how on earth do you put up with the whinging and passive aggressive bullies in the comments section?
Great vids, keep up the good work…and BTW, I think Calumet/WEX will be doing a special Rhino-Hide (artificial of course) suit for YouTube content providers soon, so keep your eyes peeled..;)

Don't forget that you can buy budget softboxes if you just want to get a feel for it. I have some that cost me maybe $50 each and for what I am doing as a relative beginner they are totally suitable. Rather than big power strobes, I use speedlights – used Canon EZ strobes that do not work on new ETTL with my DSLRs. They cost me from $25 to $75 "used" – most looked like they had never been out of the pouch. I use Pocket Wizards, most of which were also used. I bought one set of PlusX but then bought some Plus II used. These also averaged $50 each. I have one MultiMax which, on its own, is not used to potential but drives the other triggers. So basically each softbox with speedlight and pocket wizard put me out of pocket $150. Add $50 for a light stand… $200 / light complete. Which in a small space, works fine. Light is light, and I am confident that Karl could do wonders above my images with my kit.

Thanks Karl, very informative. My camera, lens, lights and modifiers are very similar to what you used here, but I still frequently get the eye rolls with "oh, your shots come out perfect because of all the expensive gear you're using!"

  18. Edie Potgieter says

Fantastic video. Thank you so much Karl!

If you are only using the two lights, then what is your trigger controlling that is flashing?

I'd like to ask if this images can be achieved using Nikon D3300 DSLR camera?? Thanks for the tip sir. and God speed!

  23. Saff Michael says

Can't really judge quality of photo through a 1080p or less video. Is that compression banding from the camera or the video?

  24. Uff Off says

I love karl taylor dont get me wrong. He's just a little out of touch with us poor folk when we say expensive equiptment. We mean your 400$ worth of aoftboxes and 1200$ lights powering them. Ive tried a few texhniques with the cheap stuff i have and its very hard ro get similar results. But eventually i get something satisfying and not so crappy. I learned allot from him so im like his biggest fan really. But he made me chuckle with the 200$ softbox comment. Hell mine was 30$ 😅

  25. Louis Amore says

Nice and love your tutorials but we know its all about lighting at the end of the day, gear also means lights too 🙂 but still, just invested in my Broncolor Siros Ls and the Octa 75 and Broncolor strip, I really love these lights

  26. Devin Chaves says

Would the single big softbox look okay in the field? For instance shot pretty wide open with blurred office background?

  27. Ruud the Diamond says

I would have taken a few pics of Fabienne, I think she is also a very pretty girl. I'd love to put a smile on her face.

  28. MT Nguyen says

hi Karl – what's the power setting on the two lights? are they both metered at 6.3 like your camera fstop?

  29. Phineas Lindbergh says

Great video Karl! Keep up the excellent work!

  30. Lloyd Kenney III says
