5 Reasons For Photography School
In this video, I answer the popular of question everyone asks. Should I go to photography/art school, learn online or get a different college degree? Well I go over 5 key reasons why photography school may be perfect for you.
What makes photo school or any other art school different over regular college degrees? Well it comes down to the course and classes you take. With a typical 4 year college/university degree you get a well rounded, also picked, course to cover business, marketing, science…etc. But with a specific art school you get down to the point.

Im interested in food, makeup,hair, and photos etc. However, i feel like going to photography school is the route i should take first because quality is everything! Is this the right way to go? I can go either route with a visual arts degree.
I am going to photography school and im getting all the BS of college. NO business classes, NO marketing, NO lighting, NO photoshop………… GRRRRR my school sucks
I'm going to be a bit long winded ahah! But yeah on the great scheme of things a photography degree is somewhat pointless to someone who is just wanting a piece of paper to hang on their wall. But for those who are wanting to be in an environment where you are surrounded with like-minded people, can seek advice and from lecturers, have access to equipment and studios. Then it is definitely worth it!
I started my degree a few years back when I just left high school and at my college (city of glasgow college) we have amazing facilities and dedicated lecturers who gives us advice and workshop classes and apply the skill you learn in the studio whereas a lot pf people can't do that be simply watching videos on Youtube (but they are still very useful) as most of us don't have the privilege of a studio when starting out. We also get a lot of talks from quite successful people in the industry also like David Eustace, James Phaff and ex-students.
Personally I feel that my photography has sky rocketed in terms of my skill set and professionalism. You learn, are able to apply a lot of new skills and are given briefs that you'd likely get from future clients that have deadlines. But at the end of the day its more about what you can take away such as your portfolio, experience and knowledge than the degree. Although it might get you a few more clients ahah… 😉
My advice is to do your research and find a great institute that suits your needs the most. So if you want to do fashion, product, advertising etc. Then somewhere that focuses on the more commercial side would be ideal but if you like to shoot film and/or want to have your work in galleries then a place that specialises in fine art photography may be for you. But honestly decide if photography is definitely the career path you want to take before jumping into a degree at it's expensive and take a lot of commitment! 😛

I took photography classes when I was in vocational school, good enough for me. lol
