Mirrorless Camera Low Point of View Advanage For Bird Photography
Using the flip out screens on mirrorless cameras allows for a low point of view without laying down in the wet sand. Also, the micro 4/3’s Olympus cameras offer lightweight compact cameras with incredible reach, which makes shorebird photography easy and fun!

Great video Tim. That low down angle for bird photography really makes the pictures something special.

Naaaa Tim, you went to the dark side 😢

  4. Georg Kleger says

What about the Nikon d500? Has a flipout screen as well. Not a mirrorless? That`s true.

I use a right angle adapter in 5D Mk 4 for the same purpose. It gives a better view and even has optical magnification. I have to kneel down though…

To be honest I never even though about words eye view with a telephoto lol

Have you tried the Olympus gear with BIF yet?

How is the Olympus combination for birds in flight? I remember you mentioning some issues there with the EOS R on your Bosque trip. Is the E-M1X, 300 f/4, and extender an improvement for that purpose? I have an older mixed M43 system (E-M1 and Panasonic 100-400) with a bit less reach. It's great for static shots but not a good BIF experience at the far end.

Tim – thanks for your comments on the micro 4/3s Olympus. I am intrigued by this very lightweight, compact option for bird photography, especially with their pro 300mm F4 lens + TC. They have a pro 100-400mm coming out in the next year. I just don't want to be let down on image quality, as I am using the Nikon D850 + 500mm F4 E and the TC1.4. The 840mm reach of the Olympus adds to the appeal, for sure. Then there's Pro Capture too. Looking forward to a full review.

While the Canon R and RP have the swing out screen so does the 6DMKII. Not sure why Canon hasn’t done this with more of their bodies, looking at you 1DX and 5D. I also have an Olympus EM1X and I’m really starting to love it. Really like it with the 12-100 lens but may look into getting the new 12-200 they have. It is very nice quality and the ergo metrics are the best. It just fits my hand and everything is right where it should be. No fumbling or fiddling around looking for the thumb wheel or switch.

there are several dslr cameras out there that have the same type of moving rear screen they can do exactly the same thing, this feature is not limited to mirrorless bodies

Oh no … don't say I have to rethink and get some new gear again … 😫 … 🤣. I really seems interesting though with all these advantages. Thanks for your point of view in this matter. Interesting.
