Hi Thomas, I would like to say you are a bit wrong with the advice you gave @Jay Vindoes as I see it he should get an education, as it is hard without one, i know – but why couldn't that be in photography? You can chase your dreams and still put some safety there for you with education. I think parents worry about their children's failure with their own believed shortcomings (not that they have any) and that's why they say to do something that will be safe. though what is a safe career? I am not saying do photography or leave school but i would say keep dreaming take every opportunity to shoot and work hard both with shooting and school especially while your young and you have so much free time. As success in any field takes hard work.

Informative, succinct, and good content. You may have felt pushed fir time Thomas but I liked this video. More of this format please – it doesn't detract from your style at all. Less is more.

You became successful because you are genuine and passionate. You filled a niche in the market with content that isn't focused on gear and basics, but rather focuses on the art of landscape photography. I hope to someday attend one of your workshops!

  10. Colin Barnett says

You are modest and honest—two appealing traits. (And I loved seeing your dog!)

Thomas, I appreciate your honesty and encouraging followers and those who wish to be photographers to do their due diligence, don't give up the dream, but maintain realistic planning in the meantime. Safe travels and continued success!

How about retaking your first landscape photo with all your knowledge you collected? Would be a nice side project 😉

I am interested in your opinion about adding elements to landscape photos in post. I have a night sky image that was supposed to include the Milky Way Galactic Center. Alas, due to the angles and elevations dictated by the terrain I ended up with a lovely composition that featured a rock masonry observation tower from the 1930s and a star field but no Milky Way (didn't rise far enough above the horizon). It's a great image but the sky needed an element of interest. I added a meteor trail which did the trick but is that ethical?

To the young person looking to break into landscape photography, you can gain experience and practice by getting a job like the one I had as a tourist photographer at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. While the pay wasn't great & it could get boring shooting photos of passengers about to board the ferry, I gained experience with a pro camera & in my downtime, had sweeping vistas around me that I could photograph until my heart's content.

That was the best interpretation of the Squarespace sponsor spiel ever!

you have 262.000 subscribers, If every subscrber asked one member of there family to subscribe, over night you would have 524.000. Is that nut's

This video started off so well, then the "background" music started. It seems to be a trend today for YouTubers to play background music so loud that it competes with the presenter's voice. Very difficult to hear you sometimes. Anyway, thanks for the work you do.

I prefer this format over the podcast format. Too many podcasts just have too much dead time. With a Q&A like you have done here, the questions (and I assume some idea of the answers) are known and pre-planned, so no dead time scrolling through screens and picking out something real time. This was an excellent Q&A session, in my opinion, with no wasted (viewer) time. Thanks

That was some good advice you gave to that young guy who wanted to be a landscape photographer after school. I hope he listens to you and his parents.

    My suggestion for @jayvindoes

Pursue your passion first, the money always comes after you follow your passion. You need money to survive but focus on your craft and your dream.

I would advise getting a job with national park service, travel company, cruise liner, etc. Anything that can put you closer to your passion is what I would advise as a source of income. Eventually the money will come in from your passion and you can dive fully into your passion.
