Picture Palace Portrait Challenge: Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey
The location for this secret portrait challenge is small but beautiful Roundhill Picture Palace. Being a secret portrait challenge, Gavin has no prior knowledge of the venue, model or styling and has to think fast to come up with some great photos.
The tiny cinema makes the perfect location for a vintage themed portrait shoot. Starting with simple lighting, Gavin grows the idea into a final photo which combines two flashes and a smoke machine to create an atmospheric, film noir inspired image.

Bravo !!!!
it's so good to see how challenging certain conditions can be for professional photographers. Trial and error. Awesome photo shoot. thank you!
Thank you for sharing your tips for small spaces. I find myself thinking a lot, “This would be a great shot if I only had more room.” I guess I just need to get a little more creative. You were able to get amazing shots. 🙂
Another great vid. Bring back the photoshop talk through too. We love that!
My Hero….. l love u'r totorial
ахахаха бедняга)))) маловато помещение)))?
The model is so beautiful. Her look is like Jessica Rabbit!!!
Amazing video!
I like this series. I thought that I am the only one who panics when dealing with unknown in short period of time. Thanks for sharing. You seem to come up with great idea faster than me. Like it!
Good video.
Please more.
I am a big fan of your photo challenge.
Thank you.
Great as always Gavin….Do you ever visit Australia?? PLEASE let me know if you are planning a trip "Down Under"
Loved watching you work through the challenges of the venue, Gavin! Best to Fern and Sam! Enjoyed the lesson! Happy New Year.
I love Gavin, its like Wallace and Gromit came to life and became a kick ass tog. and Gromit is a sexy bi… eh different.
My favourite photo tutorial guy ever!!!! I am a media student and find your videos so amazing. I also prefer the photoshop edits at end of each shoot along with finished shot
Great job Gavin and actually I found the video most instructive 👍 Thanks!
Galvin, how much time do you suppose you have in the theater?
Unfortunately, the model has shown little activity, as would have been much more möglivh, too bad.
isn't there any nd filter for strobes 😜😜
Both interesting and challenging location
very good job! nice!
woow the quality is crisp and clean. What camera and lens were used, to shoot this video? excellent challenge!
Thanks very much…always inspirational!
The other Adorama presenter, Daniel Norton, did a video using Savage adjustable light stands. Although you got the shots you wanted, I think they would have helped minimize the time in the set up. Great video as always! Cheers!
Hey Gavin…! That was just WaOw….!
Very inspiring, great done by the whole team!
He made that look really easy. Great shots.
Just brilliant this what we are all faced with on most shoots, Fern stunning as always. Seeing Gavin under a wee bit of pressure like us amateurs
Nice one, Gavin! It’s great to see some of the everyday issues we photographers face in small spaces and showing the building up the shot instead of the already in-place setup is a realistic reflection of the everyday challenges portrait photographers face when dealing with small spaces. Thanks for that!
When her hair is draped over one eye, if she was in a red gown you'd have Jessica Rabbit. Please do that for a photo shoot!
Hi Gavin, I wanted to say that your tutorials are great. I watch them a
L the times. This one in particular was great. Thanks
Oh wow, this is local to me!
I have got to get a smoke/fog machine, I need something that you can use wall power or battery.
Loved this video. Brilliant to see so many difficulties of a real shoot. A wide angle lens used for portraits! Problems with light and space and all verbally described by Gavin. Also, great to see the bad results before seeing the excellent ones. One question, how much time did you have?
Gavin what a great concept! You got some great images! Keep up the great work!
Nicely done!!!
This looks like a great challenge. You handled it well. What an interesting place to shoot. Thanks, Gavin.
I miss the little Photoshop time at the end of the video 😊
Nice Gavin .. the BEST .. !!!
Gavin You always make it look so easy.. awesome
Good job.
Bravo, Sam 👏 Gavin, excellent challenge!
Really nice!
AS ALWAYS you are Freak'n Awesome! I love watching you build the shot and layer stuff in. =) Can you do a quick BTS on the retouch and editing your favorites from this?
Gavin, what program/software did you use for this tethered photoshoot?
Outstanding as usual. Thanks Gavin
Brilliant as always Gav💕
