Not mentioned in the video (but something you might find useful) is the comprehensive guide to macro photography on our website:

Thank you for your feedback on our first weekly video at Photography Life!

I’ve always wanted to do a video on macro photography. My first lens (other than an 18-55 kit) was the Nikon 105mm macro, and I shot with it almost exclusively for a year. Macro photography is the reason I became a photographer in the first place, so hopefully this video inspires someone else down the same path!

The best part about macro photography to me is that you can take world-class images literally in your backyard. It’s also one of the best cures for “photographer’s block” because you never know what you might find, and there’s just so much to be inspired by.

Anyway, I hope this video clears up some of the technical hurdles of macro photography. This genre definitely requires specialized camera settings and focusing technique, but it’s not too hard to learn. Let me know below if you have any questions, and I’ll do my best to answer.

Complete tutorial? I really wish you wouldn’t use that kind of false advertising or click bait headlines. You know only too well there’s a lot more to macro. Lens reversing, extension tubes and much more. This isn’t a bad video, but it isn’t by any means complete.

I thought the speaker in this PL video was very clear and distinct, & being the fact that Macro Photography is my great pleasure, is why I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the young man’s magnificent explanation to how Macro Photography works.

Thanks for the vid, nicely explained. The trick with the flash setting (1/4 and then ttl) sounds very clever, I'll definitely try it. Regarding the back and forth movement, it hasn't worked well on a 100mm unstabilized lens (@ aps-c). I'll try with a monopod, let us know if there are tricks to use it easily and efficiently.

Regarding the youtube channel, it is a nice move. One suggestion if I may: Since you and the other authors go really in depth at the website, it would be really nice if you kept it short like you did here. Subscribed and waiting for more!

    Hello!
As a matter of fact the effective aperture of the AF-S VR Micro Nikkor 105 f/2.8G IF-ED that you are holding in your hands depends on the focused distance. The standard values from 2.8 to 32 are valid for focusing at infinity. At the closest shooting distance aperture ranges from f/4.8 to f/57 as displayed on the LCD panel / viewfinder (depending on the EV increment you set on your camera). The same applies to the AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED as well.
Check each macro lens manual for more details on effective aperture.
For the rest, please accept my congratulations: well conceived and properly exposed. Very clear and to the point, therefore easy to understand.
    Thumbs up
