7 Unusual Travel Photography Tips
Most travel photography tips touch on more or less the same stuff. Here are what I consider 7 unusual travel photography tips. They come from my own experiences and you’ve probably not heard them before.
I had a few free days while I was in Georgia and wanted to create something different. I drove to the fascinating region of Tkshaltubo – an area full of abandoned sanatoriums. The place is pretty weird and eerie – perfect for making this kind of video. So, here it is – a video about travel photography tips that I’d consider fairly unusual. They aren’t something you commonly hear.
The tips come from years of my own experiences. I always try to create photos that are different from the masses of images out there. I’d say that the knowledge I’ve accumulated has definitely helped. And, I think that these tips will help you too.
As always, if you have anything to say. ANYTHING relevant to this video. I’d love to hear from you.

Do you have any travel photography tips that aren’t usual, or that you haven’t seen anyone talk about? I’d love to hear them. I’m sure that the others watching this video would too!
Also – how am I doing with these videos? I still consider this a learning stage (as far as Youtube videos go). I’ve been active on the channel for a bit over a year, but haven’t made many videos. So, I’m looking to learn more, especially about what you – the audience thinks.
really great and thoughtful tips. love your channel.
I will rarely like someone vedio ..urs is one of them .i found it really useful
#6 is good – very few locals are photographers! Tip #8: Travel alone. You can take pictures when and where you want, and are more likely not only to talk to your travel companion, but to other people. (Next best: Have a travel companion who is as much into photography as you are. This way you can inspire each others.)
Love love your channel!
You still use the panasonic M43? I’m trying to look for one single lens to travel with, would you recommend the Oly 12-100?
Congrats on the subs, last time I saw your videos, it was under 3k 😉
Love your art. The creative force is strong with you! Thanks for sharing your passion for photography. The "ugly" photos in the former Soviet block really make one take a closer look and ask questions. What happened to the people? What did they do there? Your approach makes me want to get out their in the action right next door.
Excellent advice! I couldn't agree more, and I've noticed in myself how it's so easy it is to give into our desire to be comfortable in beautiful surroundings.
I'm so over sunsets and everything being shot during the "golden hour" in slow motion.
So much of what is being presented as great photography today looks to my eyes like life insurance ads with an overdose of sugar.
Great video 👍 tip no 5 got straight to my heart. How true that people consider their surroundings boring and shameful .. it is indeed a challenge to bring something beautiful or compelling within such ugliness. Expanding your creativity .. truly said
Very underrated channel. Deserves 1M subscribers. And a (tip include your travel vlog in short or like a timelapse video will be awesome)
Is the drone dji mavic?
I follow a lot of photography channels. You are so real and so informative. By far must favorite!
You’re the real deal, not some tourist/influencer with concierge service… a real travel photographer!
Love your channel. The content and quality is excellent. Great insights and tips that I am integrating into my work. Looking forward to taking your Behind the Scenes course.
Thank you Mitchell, your videos are always excellently produced and inspiring. my confession, I watched this video twice for your tips. Like your advice to everyone, be genuine and respectful to the people being photographed.
Hands down this has been the most helpful channel I have come across.
Very informative video. Each of the 7 tips are so simple that we could have it implemented on the go.. only experience can make such complex thought summarised to simple points.. Great..
Оу, не думал, что вы белорус))) Чудесное видео…
I am so glad I found your channel! I am doing a travel photography week in my classes, and your videos are exactly what I had been looking for about being a traveling photographer.
I agree with all the other commenters – your channel is one of the best on YouTube. All useful tips, but number 3 is the one I need to remember. I've lost count of the times i've thought "I'll come back later", and things are completely different and the opportunity has gone.
I also downloaded your 'understanding post-processing' ebook a couple of years ago & can recommend that: the advice and techniques in it have made such a difference to my images. Thanks!
This is only the second video of yours that I watched (I only just stumbled upon your channel) and,
I so relate to the tips you share, they really make sense to me.
The ones I like most: be naive, the main event is not the main subject and, look for the action at your door step
The one I so share with you is: look for the ugliness
Thank you for this and I'm going to have a look at your course online….
hi mitchell your photos is incredible composition may i know what most lnes you use for street photographs?
You're a great storyteller! And the use of sound effects and music add so much to the mood.
You just became one of my favorite photographers ever! Amazing work!
This is awesome!
Thank you for the unusual tips ! I am planing a road trip from Los Angeles to Chicago, along route 66 in July for vintage photography . Hopefully I would put some of your tips into practice; specially the ones regarding getting out of my comfort zone !
Great stuff, thoroughly enjoyable and very helpful.
Dude, SUBSCRIBED! Very interesting video, I love the way you communicate and how you provide concise examples of what you're talking about. It's also refreshing, as most photography channels here on YouTube can be all so similar (upbeat, exaggeratedly happy, repeating stuff we've seen in 20 other videos), etc. As someone who has been backpacking in Europe non-stop for the last 13 months and who had NEVER held a camera before starting this trip I find your videos super interesting! Keep it up mate!
Much respect for post soviet architecture!!! Your channel must grow!
Thanks Mitchell, really useful unusual advises 🙂 and as native Georgian, I would say I fill ashamed you know my country better than I do 😀 as always, locals prefer to travel abroad, not their own country.
that is probably the best video about photography I have ever seen!
Fantastic thoughtful advice. Subscribed! 🙂
Шикарные фото. Подписочка!
Love it…. have u been to malaysia?
Nice shot of the Aqueduct in Segovia – wow, many decades since I was last there – good tips
Since i am watching your channel and reading your blog and other contests, you are became my role model. I also try to do same like you do, i am collecting lifestories and i am visiting places which are not so touristic and sure, many times i avoid local advices, only photographers can understand these. If you come to my country, i can give you some unusual local photography advice, hehe 🙂 I am eagerly looking for an opportunity to be your local fixer once! Let me know when you come to Hungary, save my contact in that case.
I can also say that like the others said before me, your channel with 36k subs is a bit underrated, but usually those who has real values are not staying in the mainstream. However keep your style and your own brand which is really unique and impressive, i wish you more followers by finding others who are looking for real values.
Can you make a video showcaseing your car?
Great video. Agree on most of the points (just the accommodation I choose differently). Actually been in the same Ruine in Tskaltubo for my series beauty and the beast that shows both sides of city's.
One Tip I like to do is going to a random bus stop and take a random bus and hop of where I like it. Brings you to amazing places you would not have seen normally.
Forgot to mention: I really like your images that have some motion blur — that is, one or more people in focus, and then one or more people with motion blur. I find this quite challenging to do. Are you typically hand holding your camera when you do this, or using a tripod? Perhaps you could do a YouTube video on how to successfully capture motion blur in documentary photography? (without everything looking blurry) Cheers, Leo 🙂
great stuff, Mitchell. I love those old soviet era buildings! For your images, have you created any Lightroom presets that you use as a baseline? If so, would you consider selling your presets via your website? Best wishes, Leo.
First time I saw your video, I was really impressed! And then…I had subscribed 😀
I'm just here to say… I'm a videographer, not a photographer… but the extra mile that you go while editing these videos put your video over most (if all of) travel photography videos. Sound effects that go with EVERY picture, some sound effects, the examples while describing the tips, etc… just… remarkable. Thanks a lot for sharing and keep the good work.
Most inspiring and valuable video on travel photography I have ever seen . You deserve million subscribers.
Love from India.
Just subscribed after binge watching a lot of your videos.
I can't believe the value you bring to us amateurs and how you are not bigger. I wish you the most success ever, but also secretly hope you never blow up because the content/message always changes when you get big.
Keep on truckin' for us little guys. You're more appreciated than you know.
Nice video! can you please do a video on your 4WD? It looks like a great way to travel.
Your content is always fantastic and genuine 👍
