Even as a Russian, it took me some time to figure out why there was such a reaction to "the machine", but I think I got it now.
Машина (mashina) = the/a machine
Мужчина (mushina) = the/a man
I guess with this guy's accent, the way he pronounced "машина" sounded almost the same as "мужчина". And saying "Я мужчна!" = "I'm a (real) man!" earned him the respect of the mafia.
