5 Tips for Freehand Insect Macro Photography

29 28

I give you my five best tips for doing freehand macro photography of insects.

All photos in this video were shot with this camera: and I used this home built lens and flash setup:

If you don’t want to build your own super macro lens, I recommend this one (great value for money):

You could also get this one, which has a longer magnification range, but is heavier and more expensive:

I am also considering buying this new super macro lens from Laowa, which looks promising:

If you are a beginner, I recommend you to buy a regular 90mm or 100mm macro lens from one of the large lens manufacturers. These lenses are all sharp, and great value for money, and they are good to begin with to learn basic macro photography. Some examples that I recommend:

For Canon EF mount:
For Nikon:
For Sony FE:
For Micro Four Thirds:

when i was in the military during training in a forest our squad was told to lay flat in the forest in circular formation. the ground was almost all moss and we were like that for at least 15 minutes (which was a nice break at the time, too). but the longer i was lying there, the more everything around me started moving 😀 i saw so many spiders and insects that i have no idea what they are by just being in one spot but pretty much directly on the ground. so if you just wanna find insects to snap pictures off…find a mossy area and lay down 😀

thanks for this great video and also the one where you constructed the rig. i am thinking about making one for myself. I have a Fuji X camera so it should work if i just change the adapter from ef-e to ef-fx right?

I actually really liked how calm and slow speaking you were in the video. So nice compared to all the hyped up youtube videos. Also, I liked how you expressed about "slowing down". I think the neat thing about macro photography is, is that it allows us to see a whole world of creation we miss with our go,go,go society now-a-days. Excellent details in your pics.
